Company A, First Minnesota Ueg : iment, was the first company to enter. They drilled well. The second company wm the Eighth scpaipte company of Rochester, N. Y. These two companies drilled in the south of the grounds too far from the grand stand to be seen to advantage. Next followed the Muscatine Rjfies of Iowa. They matched to the front of the grand stand, saluted the judges and began to drill. They-handled their pieces well, bnt were a little weak in foot movements. They were liberally applauded. Then followed the (irand Rapids Guards, Company A, First Rat- ’ oluntoers, Joippany A, First Virginia Regiment. In general school of the soldier (that is without arms ) then in the mariusl at arms, and lastly, in the school of the company. Thirty minutes were allotted to each company to complete its program. Washinoton, Muy 26.—The Richmond Greys broke camp this morning aud left for home. They came here with the understanding that they would uot re main after they had taken part in the eompetitive infantry dr.il. Company A, Third North Carolina Regiment, also re turned home to-day. The reason is ttyvt many of the members are engaged in business, and they were unable to obtain leave Of absence lieyoitd to-day. The weather was superb to-day. The day was industriously devoted to com petitive drilling and the authorities profiting by experience and criticism, are making the work very interesting. Seven or eight thousand spectators were on the grand stand. The competing infantry companies were the Governor’s Guards, of Raleigh, N. 0.5 the Louisiana Ritlos; the Sars- lield Guards, of New Haven, Conn.'; Company C, first N. J.; Company B, Washington Light Infantry Corps; Toledo, Ohio, Cadets, and Company A, Washington, 1>. C.. Cadets (colored). Three of the companies are worthy ot special mention: The Louisiana Rifles, the Washington Light Infantry (Wash ington's crack corps) aiid tho Toledo Cadets, the Toledo men probably carry- ingoff the palm. The competition for the artillery prizes was narrowed to two companies and the contest consequently was for the first prize of $1,500. The Petersburg, Va., company had withdrawn from the con test. Had there been a third contestant • second prize of $1,000 would havt- been swarded. One company from Indianapdfis and one from Milwaukee drilled to-day. The guna, horses and drivers, and also the jii t^ea of the contest, were furnished by the Third (regular) Artillery.
