To one who has never before been in
the upper part c-f this State a trip from
Bluckvillu to this place is full ot interest.
The scenery is nu ever widening pano
rama, grand and gloomy enough if not
beautiful. The Greenville road docs not
run trains on Sunday and I was oh’
Jigod to come on that day my route was
on the 8. C. Railway to Augusta, then
on the A. A K. road to Greenwood,
then on tho <}. k S. to Spartanburg and
thence by tho U & D. Air-line toGreen-
Yilte. There arc few, if any, pine < along
thereilroad above Augusta. 1 saw none,

An instance : Woodruff is a town which,
prior to the completion of tho rrtad, hud

are larger; our lands appear much richer;

undisputahle. While in Greenville I no
ticed a piece of land which had boon
planted in cotton last year. There were
no stalks reaching higher than the waist.
1 asked its yield sod was told, by no less
eminent a gentleman than Senator Maul*
din, that the farm consisltd of twcniy-
ibur acres. It had been tended with one
mule and 27 five hundred pouud bales
of cotton .had been gathered firm it.

] have heard that all the objections to
the appropriation bill when it is up for
constderntiou iu the General Assembly
come from the up country. That to the
up country member a silver dollar looks'
its big as a can wheel. That all people
from the up country are close aud pe>
nurious. Thsy are uot close and stingy.
.Never hare 1 met a more whole-souled,
generous people. They enjoy life thor-
ongbly and help all around them to do

came a stranger, and yet I can not look
back on any time in my life when I re
ceived more attention, kind cousidcra-
tion and pood fellowship. Kvery lawyer
Itas treated me like a brother; the Sen.
ator and Representatives have done like
wise ; so have many of the citizens, and
the Greenville News, proprietor and staff.
Not even The 1*koflk has ever treated
me better—-and did one out of ten of my
friends do by me as it has done life would

So the effect that the friends of Senator
Mauldin intended to insist upon placing

Lieutenant Governor. I have examined

din is satisfied with his present position.
That his friends think the office of Sen*
ator from Greenville county fully as hon
orable as the office mentioned and that
if he is not ts be Governor they would
prefer keeping trim where he is. He
■would make a beau-idsal Governor.—
South Carolina could have uo better Ex
ecutive than ho would make. I hope, but
fie not believe, that his frierds will put
