Begins Practice of Optometry In City Dr. W. B. McCurdy, Jr., arriv ed in Camden this week to begin a practice of optometry in the offices above Frank’s Drug Store. A native of Florence, Dr. Mc Curdy attended Clemson and The University of South Carolina be fore the war. After three years in the army, he returned to the University of South Carolina for a pre-med course. He later enter ed Northern Illinois College of Optometry where he received his degree. During 1947, the year for which we have the most recent figures, pneumonia took naarly §5,000 lives. Pneumonia attacks all ages, bat it is most frequently fatal among infanta and very old people. At though it can occur at any time of the year, it is most common during the winter months when chilling and over-exposure to the cold, factors favorable to the onset of pneumonia, are most likely to occur. So until we know definitely otherwise, pneumonia most be considered n communic able diteiifv and pneumonia pa tients should be kept away from other people to prevent the pos sible spread of the disease. There are various types of pneu monia, caused by different kinds of organisms, germs or viruses. The two most common pneumonias are those censed by germs known aa “streptococcus” and “pneumo coccus." Streptococcal pneumonia usually attacks when the body has already been weakened by some other dis ease, such ss measles, whooping cough or influenza. It is frequent ly a complication of one of those Illnesses, especially when prompt medical care of the primary In fection is neglected. Pneumococcal pneumonia is a primary infection, although the patient frequently suffers from te be a “heavy cold" before the acute attack of P®*®* mania. Doctors believe that fcnon* mococd can be present ^ and threat of a perton, bat that the disease deeeaot develop natU the resistance of the individual’s body Is temporarily lowered by fa tigue, malnatrition, or exposure to chilling or wet weather. Although treatment of the vari ous pneumonias with penicillin and the sulfa drugs has saved many (Ives in recent years, there is no practical vaccine for the prevention of pneumonia. As far aa we~know, the best way to avoid pneumonia is by avoiding anything that tends to reduce the body's vitality and resistance, espe cially during the winter months.
