Laney of the Beard-Laney company. Statistics show that motorists under the in fluence of intoxicants are 55 times as likely to be involved in an in jury accident as non-drinking drivers. These statistics take on a new and more terrifying significance in light of the coming holidays and, lor this season, the American trucking industry is putting great er emphesis on safe driving dur ing this month. The Motor Trans portation Association of South Carolina places the emphasis on one plume of highwav safety each month. The theme for December is “Holiday Hazards.” Professional truck drivers, the woricTs safest, are required to drive in all kinds of weather and through aR seasons. They must be prepared to meet the changing elements One of the unnatural elements that is more prevalent this tiipe of year is the thought less, holiday driver, or the one under die influence of alcohol. The ever-the-road truck driver is trained to be especially alert for motorists pulling out of roadside taverns or from driveways in cities during the holidays. Ex perience has shown that the driven of these automobiles are often concerned with thoughts other than on their driving and it is up to the professional driver to think for them. To think-for the other driver is to drive defensively and defensive driving is almost a prerequisite for safe holiday driving. When you use your car during the holi day season, be on guard against the driver who is returning from party. Remember your re sponsibility to your family, your friends and to society when you attend the holiday festivities. The professional truck driver knows driving is a serious business and asks your cooperation to keep the holiday season accident free.
