Taking on the Lancaster Blue Hurricanes in Lancaster Friday night, the boys from Camden came out on the top half of t 33-32 ffnal count in a see-saw, hoteold battle that saw anything go, including the 21 point pre-game odds. Of Brothers To Flavin Bowl World Of Sports It upset of the sea- school football was . lory over Sumter on night, 13 to 12. The Game- rere thought to have a de cided advantage over the Cyclone, had been tied earlier in the second half with Bulldogs came quick ones _ ___ 83-13. Then in the fourth quarter, the Lan caster eleven bounced back and, as boosters of both teams stood unbelieving, scored three times to run their tally to 32 points, one point short of a tie. The contest was so close and ♦ty (coring was so frequent that the final whistle brought differ ences of opinion all over the field as to who was the winner. Lan caster’s field boasts no scoreboard, and mental calculations of the total of 65 points scored proved inaccurate. . „ Jimmy Cox, Camden s all-state tailback, put on what was prob ably his most brilliant showing of the season, scoring three of the five Bulldog tallies, and passing for the other two. The most troublesome thorn in the side of the Camden team was a 120-pound halfback named Jack Cockrell, who broke loose at regular intervals for long runs. The Hurricanes drew first blood in the contest when, midvmy the first quarter, they took advant age of a bad snap from center when the Bulldogs were on their own 20 and End Barefoot covered the wildly bouncing ball behind the double stripe. The try for ex tra point was good and Lancas ter led, 7-0. The Bulldogs received, and Cox returned to his 30. Gayle Kerr took a reverse 18 yards to the 48, and on the next play Cox went through like he was shot from a cannon to carry 52 yards for a tally. Seconds later he added the extra point and the game was tied, 7-alL Lancaster was not to take the lead again. Lancaster received, ran two . s, and fumbled on their 40. amden recovered, and on the first play, Cox went through the hole for 30 yards. Patterson car ried to the two on an end- around, and Cox skirted left end on a naked reverse that caught the Hurricanes napping. The try for extra point failed and the Bulldogs ledT 13-7* A short quick kick gave the Lancasters possession on their 39. After eeking out a first down in four tries, Scatback Cockrell scooted through ior 22 yards to place the halT inside the 10-yard marker. Williams carried the rest of the way and, after failing to make the extra point good, the fame was tied at 13-13. The Bulldogs received and after rolling off two first downs, Jim my Cox drew back and chunked one 35 yards into the waiting arms of glue-fingered Gayle Kerr, who ha d no trouble gomtf the remain-) ing five yards for the third Cam den score. This time the extra point split the markers and the score stood, Camden 20, Lancas ter 13. And that’s the way the half ended. As tha third period opened, Camden received, failed to make a first and kicked to their oppon ents’ 40. Cockrell slipped through for 15 and a first down, but the Lancasters couldn’t do it again and Chasser kicked to the 10. Patterson caught a Cox pass for 15 and lateraled to Beleos for an exifa 5 to the 15. The Bulldogs picked up a first down, carried to the one, and it was Cox again to score standing. The extra point was good again and the Bulldogs led, 27-13. On the first play of the final S friod, Gayle Kerr went out, cut ward center, and Cox hit him with a short pass. Kerr gathered it in, turned and raced aH the wav. The extra point was missed and the Bulldog score was upped six points to 33-13. Then Lancaster came back. The kick was returned to their 38. Then from a third down kick for mation Chasser passed to Cock rell, who sprinted 65 yards for a Tee Dee. Trie extra point was no good. Camden 33, Lancaster 1ft The Bulldogs received and aft er three plays a pass intended for Bud Barfield (who, incidentally, turned in a fine performance in spite of the fact that he was play ing with a fever of 102), gave the Lancaster eleven possession of the ball ideep in Bulldog terri tory. After making a first down, the Hurricanes moved toward the Camden goal, and the drive was climaxed when Williams went over from the two. What proved to be the all-important try for ex tra point was no good and the score’ read: Camden 33, Lancas ter 25. Camden received and moved for two first downs, but a 15-yard personal foul penalty in favor of Cttnden was offset oy a 15-yard clipping penalty against them and, as a result the Bulldogs were required to make 25 yards for a first down. The try failed, and the ball went over to Lancaster. Chasser gathered in a pass that carried to the Camden 35, and Cockrell again shook' loose and scampered down the sidelines to Camden’s 4. The Hurricanes car ried it over on the second try, the extra point was good and the score stood a close 33-32. Less than two minutes later the whistle ended it all. His three elder brothers*— Hugh, Dickie and Carol each had received a similar invi tation. Hugh and Carol* like Jimmy, were high school backs while Dickie played in the line. Incidentally a great many high schools throughout South Carolina are gratified to know that Jimmy is the last of the Cox brothers inso far as high schodl football is concerned.
