MILLER'S for Lumbar Downward Trend Sooth Carolina Farm Land Prices Farm land prices in South Carolina after reaching an index of 271 per cent of thelM5-39 base which equaled 100 have turned downward, according to M. C. Rochester, leader, Clemson Agri cultural Economics Extension Work. He says that according to a recent report of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, farm the was only 2 per cent Dr. Rochester points out that following World war II, South Carolina farm land prices have not reached the high peak of 1920. The index of 278 per centof 1935- 39 base reached in March 1949 was almost 3 per cent leas than the high peak of 1920. On the other hand, the high peak for the nation following world War II was about 3 per cent greater than the 1920 peak, he states. “Farm land prices follow cur rent and expected income from farming,” he explains. “In 1948 the index of cash marketings of farm products was 350 per cent of the income for the period 1935- 39. Farm- operating costs have in creased materially, but it appears that present farm land prices are supported by current farm in comes. However, with downward adjustments in agricultural prices and farm incomes, land prices will be expected to continue to de cline moderately. Nothing like the drastic decline of 45 per cent in the early twenties to expected. The economy to now equipped with several shock absorbers, or cushions, to prevent the recur rence of such catastrophic condi tions. Among such things are the farm price support programs, in- deposi Warn Dairy Herd Owners Mastitis Season Approaches With colder weather coining On, mastitis cases may increase in dairy herds, the American Foun dation for Animal Health has warned cattle owners. “Mastitis frequently follows teat or udder injury,” a founda tion bulletin says, “Many animals which have spent much of the day on pas ture are being- confined to barns at this time of year as pastures taper off. This means that mas titis hazards are greater.” To safeguard cows, the Founda tion kdvised these precautionary the barn for high sills, protruding nails or any objects which may injure teats and ud ders. “Have a veterinarian examine all animals for the disease. In fected cows should be put at the end of the milking line and milk ed last “Practice rapid milking, mak ing sure that teat cups are not left on any longer than neces sary. Check vacuum gauges; too much vacuum is responsible for numerous teat injuries. “Disinfect the milking equip ment and see that the cow’s teats and udders, and milker’s hands are washed and dried, since these are the paths by which mastitis infection travels from diseased to healthy animals. “Keep a close lookout for. sighs of troubie. If called promptly, veterinarians can save many cases which otherwise might soon become untreatable.” THC/W our in u LATTN BY PHYSICIAN i CAMS Lr*- • t * AS MANY AS 1000 SKE6P CAN BC HANDLED BV A SINGLE TRAINS’ BORDER COLLIE AMERICA HAS MORE EREEDS Of PUREBRED BOGS than THE TOTAL OF HORSE, DAIRY COW, SHEEP, HOG AND POULTRY BREEDS COMBINED • IMS. Lower prices for farm products and smaller farm incomes combined with high costs of the things farmers bu; ly small del some in the future. Mnoww XS* WAV* uy may make a relative- ebt now become burden- tinues. “As an example of the ef fect of changes in prices of farm products it took only six bales of cotton to pay $1,000 of debt in 1948. With 1939 prices it took 22 bales to pay this amount and with 1932 prices it took 31 bales to pay the same amount Other signifi cant changes show that it took 21 hogs or four beef animals to pay $1,0000 of debt in 1948. In 1939 it took 80 hogs or 14 beef animals to pay the same debt. Present high costs of farm lands and high costs of equipping a farm combined with the high operating costs still spell caution to prospective land purchasers without experience and necessary capital to get established in farming,” he cautions. Mr. Laney made this statement in conjunction with the Motor Transportation association’s court esy and safety program which is currently being conducted in this state. “Many people who are struck vehicles on the highway at it are those who have never driven a car and therefore do not understand the driver’s problems, they, not knowing anything about driving, see the headlights of the car and believe they are easily Impaired vision, or tern- due to your i headlights, may make them walk in front of your car so be alert at all times/’ Mr. Laney said. Look out for pedestrians when you are out on tiie highway—day or night The professional truck driver to constantly reminded of this fact in his never-ending safe ty training and the passenger car driver could do well to use the same vigilance. Safe driving at night or any other time, as far as that is con cerned, is the responsibility of the driver. It to toe duty of the safe driver to drive defensively; that is to drive in such a manner as to anticipate the sudden or un expected actions of another driver, or pedestrian.
