The same cam occur on turning over a rock or tugging at a plane in the field or garden. The situation has not reached the stage where we must “stop, look and listen” every time we do anything but it might be worth while to be cautious espec ially if the spider is known to inhabit the vicinity. * Only a few persons are bitten each year. The majority are Cali fornians, followed in line by Vir- E inians and then Floridians. The ite itself is not too painful; it feels like a sharp, stinging, needle like prick. Shortly thereafter the area begins aching, dull at first but increasing in severity and tempo as the poison is absorbed. Within one-half to one hour, dis tress spreads to all parts of the body and the afflicted one if writhing in agony. Survival is the rule but the outlook depends upon the degaee of poisoning. Children react more markedly than adults; and those who are debilitated through al cohol, for example, ere likely to suffer more than healthy persons. In the pest, many remedies were advocated (from SO to 90 have been listed) but in recent years the use of calcium gluconate has proved best When injected direct- vein, there is instantan eous and prolonged relief of pain uscle spasm. C Cotton Contest Enrollment Hus Year Very Large South Carolina cotton growers are still interested top improving the quality and lowering the costs of production of cotton, the state's leading cash crop. This is shown by the fact that this year’s enroll ment in the state 5-acre cotton improvement contest is the largest in it’s history and that more coun ties than ever before have quali fied for county prizes. _ A preliminary report released this week by Harry G. Boylston, Clemson extension cotton im provement specialist, shows that, with reports from three bounties not included, the total enrollment July 1, the closing date, was 975 contestants. Forty three of the 46 counties of the state showed an enrollment of 10 or more contestants per county to qualify them for county prizes as well as for the district and state prizes. The three coun ties not reporting are Beaufort, Charleston and Georgetown. Very little cotton is grown in these counties and none of them will likely qualify for the county prizes. -This compares with e-total -en- follment of 915 with 42 counties qualifying for the county prizes in 1948. Mr. Boviston points out that an extra .effort is bring made this year to beat the present state re cord of 8,275 pounds of lint cotton reduced on five acres by J. arvey Neeley, Chester count nty, ays that many excel lent fields of cotton are to be noted among the contestants but that the unusually heavy weevil infestation of this season may tend to lessen the chances of ex ceptionally high yields this fall.
