The fiber, available for test only in an undyed state at present, showed a high resistance to chemicals, the institute reported. Undamaged by the' common spotting reagents which dissolve cellulose acetate rayon, the fabric can be finished as is that cloth, the tests showed. From the test results, the in stitute deduced that glacial acetic acid, chloroform or acetone will distinguish cellulose acetate rayon from nylon or Orion, and concen trated (88 per cent) formic acid can be used to tell nylon from Orion. The fact that Orion bums more rapidly titan Nylon and leaves a darker ash will also be helpful in this test, it was pointed out Dry-cleaning solvents or the common chemicals used in spot ting do not affect the new fiber, according to the tests. Other chemicals, stronger than those commonly used in dry-cleaning plants, had no effect on the Orion, with 5 per cent hydrochloric acid, 5 per cent sulfuric acid and 10 per cent caustic soda included in this group, the institute said. ther tests disclosed that stain removal would not be unusually difficult with Orion, with even Parker “51" Tunis Blue and mer- curochrome being removed com pletely. That the marking ink, enamel, shellac, and varnish were not completely removed in tests in dicated that Orion would behave somewhat like cellulose acetate rayon in its retention of stains, it was said. / Orion presented no difficulty in wet cleaning, the report stated, with the fabric not wrinkling as easily as do rayons, and extractor wrinkles not as pronounced after a rather hard extraction. How ever, the tests showed character istics such as wrinkling and form ing of extraction wnnkles may be affected by fabric construc tion. In these tests the institute encountered no shrinkage. For finishing on equipment, the institute found that the tempera ture set for cellulose acetate ray on would do for Orion, with its behavior similar to ravon in that it will take a rather sharp crease and hold it for a long time. The Clemson College Extension Service reported this week that “there is quite likely to be a se vere shortage of all cotton poisons within the next three weeks.” Delays in farmers ordering sup plies and a recent “price war” among dealers were given as the causes. The extension service said aver age weevil infestation for the week ending July 9 was 16.5 per cent on poison fields and 37 per cent on unpoisoned fields. It reported some infestation In 95-2 per cent qf all fields checked. The average percentage infesta tion of four community dusting projects in the state was 14.5 as compared with 27.8 per cent in fields not dusted in adjoining areas.
