MYSTERY OP “FLYING SAUCERS" IS REVIVED BY A COLUMNIST * Since the' “flying saucers'’ wtoich created mueh talk a little over a year ago were reported seen by Kersnaw county people, there is local interest in recent develop ments regarding same. The latest discuMion waa precipi tated by a flat statement by Walter Winchell m his column to the effect that the “saucers” were Russian missiles. A story from Washington, following this statement by Winchell, said: The United States air force has clamped a lid of secrecy on its investigation of reported “firing saucers,” which recently ware re ported to be Russian guided mis siles. The air force declared that all information on the subject not al ready made public is “classified. The air force accepted all re sponsibility for investigation of the phenomena after they created a nationwide sensation almost two years ago. At that time the USAF said it would welcome any reliable information on “flying saucers.” ‘ Reliable information is still welcome, regardless Of its source and air force officials said they would be glad to receive any pertinent data. The air force is known to feel that it is the duty of any citizen having what he considers import ant information on the subject to report it first to official circles. The Russian guided missile re port of last week broke a long silence on the subject, but the USAF maintained its secrecy. In a carefully qualified statement, it said: ‘To date there has been no tangible evidence which would support a theory that any inci dents are attributable to activity of a foreign nation. However, there are some incidents reported by reliable and competent observers which are still unexplained.” It was learned that secrecy has been imposed for two reasons. First, any investigation into the possibility that the reported sau cers might be guided missiles in volves investigation of the United States’ own missile program, which is in the top secret classi fication. Second, the air force didn’t know just how much it might find out in its investigation. It is standard, if not official, military practica to make such matters secret. Some observers suggested that the IjfSAF is keeping the matter a $tfcret because it doesn’t know arf^thing itself. I The air force refused flatly to expand on the “incidents 'report ed by reliable and competent ob servers which are still unexplain ed.” It was assumed, however, that one such incident was that of the airline pilot who first re ported in the summer of 1947 that ne saw mysterious saucerlike fly ing objects. He said he followed the objects without being able to identify them. In the annual contest in news writing, sponsored by the Palmet to Scholastic Press Association, held at Summerville, April 9, ’49, of Roosevelt Jackson, ’4s, I Academy, won first place foe the article, “Larry Doby Was a Matherite.” Other awards went to students from Wilson Hi of Florence, Burke of Charleston and to Alston Hi of Summerville. The best all-round paper award went to the “Par- venue” of Burk. Althea James, Thomasina Mar tin, and Clemigene Anderson were delegates from Mather who attended the conference. After the business meetings of the students and the -isdvisors, there was a general assembly at which time Nelson Wells of Burke reported on his recent trip to the annual Scholastic Press meeting held at Columbia University where he and Leon Gibbs were participants in one of the panel discussions. The climax of the program was an informal talk on high school newspapers by Tom Hamrick, editor of the “Summerville Scene.” A motor tour of the city was follewed by a dinner at the Duck Inn.
