President Truman has set aside the month of April as Cancer Con trol month in a proclamation in which he states that “cancer has steadily increased in importance as a cause of death in this coun try and now accounts for approx imately one death in every eight” The President further states that “according to the best medi cal opinion a large number of cancer deaths could be prevented if full use were made of our pres ent knowledge concerning early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.” Willys-Overland Reduces Prices Price reductions announced by Willys-Overland put the com pany’s vehicles at the lowest price level in their field, according to L. R. Mellichamp, of Mellichamp- Mahoney Motors, Willys-Overland dealer. • "2_‘\ The price reductions range from $25 to $270. In the passenger car field, Willys-Overland now has the lowest-priced full-size station wagon, station sedan, and sports car, Mr. Mellichamp declared. The new prices of the Willys- Overland three-quarter ton truck, four-wheel-drive truck, panel de livery, and Universal Jeep are al so in the lowest range of their re spective fields, he said. ‘These new low prices repre sent a double saving,” Mr. Melli champ pointed out “They pro vide a low initial cost in addition to the well-known thrift of Willys-Overland vehicles in ope ration and maintenance. They are now America's most economical as well as most useful vehicles. I am proud that our company took the lead in bringing prices down” In announcing the price reduc tions, James D. Mooney, president and board chairman of Willys- Overland, said four major factors have made the move possible at this time. He listed these as: 1. Improvement in steal and other supplies. WHlys-Overiand now benefits from its purchasing policy during the period of great est shortage. WMb steel supplies improving, substantial savings in steel costa are possible tfnce the company is not burdened with long-range contracts at high pric es nor high-cost steel producing facilities. 2. Easing of material shortages, resulting in savings through a sustained volume, a better control of stocks, and a smoother .flow of production. 3. Results of the WUlys-Over land policy of maintaining its ba sic models instead of making an nual model changeover*, bined with high interchangeabil ity of parts, this policy avoids heavy tooling expenditures and costly Interruptions of production. 4. Willys-Overland’s functional design, which eliminates the wasteful use of materials in frills that add nothing to a motor car's performance or comfort.
