Strange of the Game cocks had what looked like a sure score and had sifted through the Camden secondary and was head ed for the last chalk line when Beleos erupted and after a burst of speed, launched himself at the fleeting Gamecock. It was a per fect tackle and Strange was stopped three yards from pay dirt. Camden’s fine line then proceed ed to stall off the thrusts of the Gamecocks and took over in their own one yard line. Sumter scored in the third quarter. L*d by Hill with some nice running, the visitors carried the ball to the Camden 33. Cain’s pass to Kirven was good for four yards. Hill again took over and took the ball to the Camden 18. At this juncture Sumted pulled a rabbit out of the hat when after starting wide around his own left end, whipped a pass- to Frank Strange who was far to The play sucked the entire Bull dog defense tothe left and Strange danced over the goal line tor a touchdown. Between the halves the colorful Camden band, led by Mary Jean nette Campbell as signal major ette, entertained the crowd with some well executed marching maneuvers. It was the first time that the 1948 edition of the band has appeared before the fans here and the group was given a big hand by rooters of both footbal teams. • The cheering group was never better, the cheer leaders led by Franjt Horton putting on an en tertaining show of their own and drawing much applause from the throng. Dreher of Colum bia lost to Greenwood 20 to 0 Chester won from Walter boro 33 to 0; Hartsville defeated Conway 20 to 7; Mullins nosed out Dar lington 20 to 19; Charlotte won over Spartanburg 29 to 14. Despite an injured leg, due to a torn cartilege in one of nis knees Cox played brilliantly in both the Dreher and Sumter games. He proved to be practically unstopp able on off tackle runs and turned in gain and gain on these slash ing plays. Larry Weldon, Sumter coach, rates high as a sportsman. Weldon was Legion baseball coach at Sumter, also manager of the Sum ter Palmetto team, and he is well- liked for his fine sportsmanship' qualities.
