C, on Sep tember 15. Moore will have charge of the year-round athletic program of the mills, which is to feature golf, tennis; baifcetball, baseball, etc.. Palmetto league followers will be interested to know that Tom mie LaSorda and Eddie Leary, two Camden pitching aces of the 1947 pennant winning Chiefs came from the Joanna Mills team. That indicates the class of ball that Moore is to take charge of next spring. , Moore's record of 16 wins as against 7 defeats in the Palmetto league this past season while out standing in the league records would nave been sensational had he been given the proper support in the closing weeks of action. Wobbly support cost Moore near ly all of the defeats that were charged against him. For three-quarters of the sea son Moore had his Chiefs at the top of the ladder, but the loss of Cy Havird, one of the best first basemen in the league and the desertion by Ace Cooper, pitch er and utility man, threw the Chiefs into a slump from which .. , . - , . . they never emerged, excepting °*,^ e ffl* 8 ** when they battled tHe Orange burg Braves, a team that they proved a jinx to all season. The Chiefs finished in a tie for fifth that Moore has reached what might be the “happy hunting grounds” for baseball men of * Johnny Moore is but 26 |ean old. And so .it was that Johnny became manager and [ dace with the Georgetown Ath- e etics. With Moore -heading the pitch ing staff of the Joann Jdills team next summer, that outfit will probably stack up as one of the best of the kind in the south. The mills boast some splendid base ball talent so it would appear some interesting facts.
