W. Smith of Camden, was given a lengthy write-up in a recent issue of The Jet Gazette, the official publica tion of the Shaw Air Force Base. The write-up. which was accompanied by a picture of Captain Smith, follows: Capt. Vander L. Smith, command ing officer. Headquarters Squadron. 20th Fighter Wing, has led a varied and so far not uneventful life. Bom July 11, 1919, he attended' Bethune high school, Bethune, un til graduation in 1937. After grad uation he w^ employed by the Sohoco Products Company, in Hartsville,. until September. 1940, when he decided to enliat in the army. , He was attached to the 118th In fantry Division at Fort Jackson un til he was discharged in Septem ber, 1941. He then returned to his ing his training at San Antonio. Texas, in August of the same year. He remained there until Novem ber of the same year when he was transferred tq, Tiklsa, Oklahoma, and Primary Flight School. Then in February of 1943 he was trses- ferred again, thia time to Rnid. Oklahoma, and Basic Flying School. Flnishtog this course in April he was sent to Fhster Field. Texas, for his advanced flying training and single engine training.
