JUNE 4, 1948 E. /. du Pont de Nemours & Co* Many Camden people have expressed cui*losity as to the “de Nemours du Pont de Nemours & Company. In 1789, Pierre Samuel Dupont, Nomoura,-France, was in E. I. If' of tional Assembly of France. There were two other Duponts in the National Assembly, one from Lille, the other from Bigorre. To distinguish himself from them, Pierre Sam uel Dupont took to signing^his name “Du pont de Nemours." In 1800 following the French revolution, Pierre Samuel Dupont de Nemours and his two sons, Victor and Irenee, came to this country to retrieve the family fortune which ^ad been wiped out in tne revolution. In this country Pierre Samuel took to spelling ■ his name “Du Pont" instead of Dupont. The first business venture of the father and sons was Du Pont de Nemours Pere, FUs et Cie, of New York and Parks. This did not tvrn out so successfully. • One day Irenee, who 'was a chemist, was invited to go hunting. The hunters ex hausted their supply of powder and bought more at a country store. The quality was infinitely inferior to and the price higher than the British-imported powder they had be^n using. The incident caused Irenee to wonder and he began an investigation. To his surprise he learned ^at there were scarcely any powder plants worthy of the name in the United States. Irenee Du Pont began at once to work on the establishment of a powder, factory. A point near V/ijmlngton, Delaware, was selected as the site for the new undertak ing. The name of the firm was definitely settled as “E. I. du Pont de Nemours A Company." Irenee is said to have been in flexible on this, having said that if the plant “earns a reputation greater than that of others, and if it makes a name-^that name shall be mine." Thus was the beginning of what is today one of the greatest corporations in America. Cmn4en*s Ne\p Ma^ Henry Savage, Jr., is well qualified in e\ ery respect to become Mayor of Camden. U.imed in the law, possessing a keen busi ness mind, forward looking, a man of fine character, he is endowed with all of the at tributes that go to make a successful Chief E.\ecutive of the city. lie will become Mayor of Camden in a very important era of the life of the city. Camden is just on the verge of being trans formed from a town to a city. The next few years shouldAsee the city enjoying tremen dous growth. This tremendous expansion in Camden is going to bring many problems, particularly of government. The city will haVe to ex pand to meet Its industrial expansion. This will bring problems of finance. And then ar a town changes into a city many old customs that were permissible in a town >Nill have to be abolished. This always brings_8ome heartaches'bu^' w^^ must al- v/ays realize ^t nothing can stand in the V a v of progress. ^ . Then, too, Mr. Savage will be the first Mayor of the city to serve under the city manager form of government. We are sure Jiht he and the two commissioners will pro ceed carefully to elect the very best man they can find commensurate with the abil ity of the city to pay. We believe they will give this new form of government every opnortunity to demonstrate its practi- cfib’lity. We are sure that Mr. Savage will have the hearty support of all of the people of (.'ainden, including those who did not vote for him, in his efforts to give the city an administration of which it can be proud. aOutloud One kad fealure about Mr. Tm* man having become President la that it has caused a decline In the regard in which piano players are held. In Washington last week baseball fans at an American League game threw pop bot tles at an umpire and after the game he had to b^escorted from the grounds by the po lice. Last week at Rutherfordton the fans jumped on two umpires and the club was fined $60 by the league for failing to have adequate police protection. At Marion, N. C., there was a near riot and the umpires had to be escorted off the field by (the police. ^ \ When the full name of the present com pany is used it is spelled E. I. du Pont de Nemours A Company. When it is abbreviat ed it is referred to as the Du Pont Company. Dr. Samuel L. Latimer, Jr. The University of South Carolina this \^c*ek conferred the degree of Doctor of Literature on Samuel^ Latimer, Jr., qditor of The State, an honor well'bestowed and one which is appreciated by Mr. Latimer’s friends all over South Carolina. ' Mr. Latimer’s high standing in the field of loumalisnj is attested by the fact that hr has served as president of the South (-arolrtia Press Association and in almost evei*y other office in that organization. He is a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and of other national journalistic organizations. Not only has Mr. Latimer stood out in his cho'jon field of newspaper work but he has been actively identified with many other organizations. He was honored by being elected national vice commander of the American legion, a position which he filled with credit to himself and to the Legion. Mr. Latimer is particularly well known in Camden and his host of friends here are delighted that the honor Should have been conferred upon him by the University. By Means Of Violence A blast of gunfire was poured into a ycung Brooklyn school teacher’s home one night last week after a telephone threat of violence if she didn’t pass every one in mathematics." Three phone calls were made to the young teacher’s home during the course of the evening, while she was aw’ay at a con- d^rt. A feminine voice told the teacher’s mother: ‘If she doesn’t pau everyone in mathematics tomorrow something will happen. She’ll be fiushini^ up dakues" There seems to be growing tendency to get everything by force, if necessary, even to school diplomas' Are we eventually going to come to a cage of where might makes right? Hme just keeps rpUi|v skmg. Right here in peaceful Camden the um pire had to call on the police for protection but this was from some players oh a visiting team. Umpires make mistakes, as do all other human beings. But even if they 'didn’t there would be some fans who would want to lynch them for calling them right. We have always felt that the average umpire was calling them as he was seeing them and if he made mistakes they were of the head and not of the heart. It has always seemed so cowardly to us for a great mob Of people to want to jump on one poor man because what may really have been a mistake but an honest mistake. How’d you like for a big mob to go-after you every time you made a^nistake in your uork? Baseball authorities could help matters a lot if they enforced the rule that any kicking done on a deoiaion would have to be done by the manager. No other player of players should be allowed to participate in it. The Retiring Mayor PVancis Nolan McCorkle, who will retire in August as Mayor of Camden, has held that position for ten years. He has served during a very trying period in the history of the city. In, the first part of his admin- iitration, the country was still suffering from the shock of the depression. During *ho middle part of it the country was in a battle for its existence. During the latter pait of it the country has been in a recon struction period. So that it can hardly be said that any part of his administration has been in a normal period. Mr. .^cCoi'kle bas given of hia best to the city and we believe the people of the city very generally appreciate his efforts. He has always been a great booster for Camden and we are sure that be will con- A • * A a Miniature golf couraea are spring ing up orer the country again.
