Second—“Would you, Mr. Business man, buy stock in the proposed Clark’s Hill of which E!dgar Brown, Governor Thurmond and Senator Maybank appear as chief advocates? “The answer is a loud NO.” The Chronicle believes that if Clark's Hill is to be built, it should be by private companies, through free enterprise, rather than government Govern ment has no business in the power business or any other business in competition to private enterprise. MR. GUNTHER AND SOUTH CAROUNA * South Carolinians who have read John Gunther’s book, “Inside U. S. A.’’ are not at all happy over what the eminent writer has to say about the Palmetto State. Gunther devotes four entire pages to South Caro lina and his conelumOns about our state can best be illustrated hy the following excerpts. “South Carolina, a stubborn and rebellion^ en tity with pronounced sectionalism is very backward by most criteria. It is a curious xind of graveyard of var ious economics, having successfully lived on indigo, turpentine and rice, as well as cotton. “In percentage of white literacy. South Carolina is the forty-eighth state. MusiMippi is the lowest state culturally with South ^Carolina neext. The mill work ers of South Carolina are among the most poverty blanched and backward folk in America. “This is a case apart South Carolina is one of the oorest of American states and probably the balldest e low county people and upland people are still at loggerheads. One reason is—poor communications. Noboby can quite understand this point until he tries by rail to cross the inland area.’’ We question seriously that Mr. Gunther came to the above conclusions following a detailed study of the state. If he had, we as South Carolinians would react most soberly to his attack. But we believe his judgment followed a casual review of the state in which hearsay evidence predominated. We are sur- rised that a writer of Mr. Gunther's reputation would ay claim to accuracy on such an investigation.
