Moot eases of asthma are caused by allergies, and many are cured when doctor patient co operate to find the offending agent How is a specific allergy dls- corered? In much the same way that the existence of allergies was first made known. Eighty years ago an Ehiglish doctor who suffer ed from a strange ferer dlscOTered that when he rubbed timothy grass pollen into a cut in his hand a red, itching wheal appeared. When he applied the pollen to 'his nose he had a serere attack of what we call hay feTor. He concluded that he was hypersensitive to pol- lena Today if a doctor suspects you are suffering from an allergy he makes skin tests to determine tOk which things you are sensitive. Since there are so many things to which you could be allergic, he first asks a series of questions. If he learns that you feel ill every time you clean house, he makes a skin test with house dust or pos sibly with the dander of one of your house pets. If-the skin tests show that you are hypersensitive to house diyit, the 'doctDr can re- dnoe your sensitivity no it He be gins by injecting a weak solution of aa extract of house dust He gradually increases the strength,of the injection unHil you become ‘‘desensitised,” or are no longer al lergic. The desensitising agent is called an allergen. If your allergy had been to something easier to avoid, and not too essential as, for instance, clams, the problem would be simpler. 7%e doctor would ad vise you not to sat clams. If the skin tests were infallible, allergies would be leas of a prob- iMn. Unfortumatsly they are not Some people with an allergy do not react positively te a skin test some without an allergy do. Rufe Leonard Is Given A Tryout Rufus Leonard, the 2<-year-old Hartsville pitcher who was easily the outstanding chunker in the Palmetto league last season, is on the Washington roster ri^t now, persuaded to make a try for~n berth on the Senators ifltchihi staff by Bobo Newson, who inci dentally is also from the Hartsville baUiwlck. Leonard is a most personable chap and jn our own contacts with him when he came into our hamlet with the Sonoco gang we took quite a fancy to him. We hope .that he can make the grade with the Senators, bnt from what we Just heard from a Charlotte friend of ours who has been down at Or- lands, Fla., and who watched the Senators work out, Leonard is about 12th man on the hurling per sonnel and he did not believe he had much of a chance. However, Rufus, if be does not land a Senatorial berth will get 'a chance to pitch for _elther the Chattanooga. Tenn., or the Camr- lotte, N. C., term teams ct Wash ington. But hare is where the sttekler comes in. Rufus has a swell job ta the mill office at HartavUTe—It is said his salary is 1125 per week —which amount to come 1600 plus a month. Whether he can drag down this amount of coin with Charlotte is the big |C4 question. Anyhow we‘d like to see this 28- year-^ HaftsvlBe ehap make good. ■ii”- FINANCIAL SPARE TIRE....
