ances and unemployment compenaa-
tion benefita, a statement lasned to
day by the agency revealed.
Servicemen’s ’’allowances” totaled
$1,204,298, and unemployment com'
pensatlon ’’benefits” (to workers oov-
ered by the state job-faisnrance law)
$134,928.
Servicemen’a allowances Incrsased
41 percent oyer the $854,829 paid in
February, and unemployment corn-
peneation benefits Increased 28.g per
cent over th^ $109,196 paid in Feb-
luary.
In addition to these two types of
unemployment payments, the com
mission receives and processes claims
from ”self-empfoyed” vetersns. Thhsc
claims for March amounted to $868,-
034, the total certified to the Yetarans
Administration for payment to the
claimants hy mail direct from Ridi
mond.

that the peak In the , servicemen's
clajm-load had been reached. Initial
claims—the first tiled In establishing
potential rights to 'payments—have
gradually declined since the last
week in January. Because payments
run tor a maximum of 68 weeks this
decline has not yet been reflected In
payments, but should definitely be
realised In the near future If the
present trend continues, the commis
sion said. In other words, the agency
received only 7,205 initial claims in
March, as compared with 7,608 in
February, a decline of 5.8 percent
However, continued claims—those
filed subsequent to iniUai claims—
Increased 24.4 percent or from 54,496
In February to 67,777 In March.

tion in Coinmbia will be at the locnl
post office on Wednesday and Thurs
day, May 15 and 16 for the regular
weekly two-day recruiting visit.
They will Interview young men
from 17 to 26. years of age who are
Interested In g^eral sorvice or for
duty In aviation units. They will be
guaranteed a. 10-day furlough upon
completion of recruit training. Men
who enlist before October t, 1946 will
still be eligible to participate fn the
benefits provided by the O. I. BUI of
Rights.

Automobile association. The South
Caroling Slate Automobile asaociatlon
has assisted the state highway patrol
in organising a number of school
safety petrols in the state by fur
nishing the b^ts and badges for the
patrol members.
There are now over . 200 school
safety jiatrols In the stats and to
date hgve not had an accident Ih a
school that has a safety patrol.
The students and faculty met In the
anditorinm with the Introductioa
made by superintendent of schoola,
J. G. Rlcbarde, Jr. Safety talks were
made by Patrolman Fallaw and* Ern
est Sessions. The need of greater
safety was very strongly stressed,
and that each pedestrian, motorist and
bicyclist has a great responsibility to
cooperate to the fullest extent with
our law offlcere in reducing the ever
mounting toll of accldenta. Fifty-three
persons were killed in South Carolina
during the month of March of this
year compared wHh twenty-eix in
Merely of last year. Five of the killed
the unprecedented offer by the army
of a free collegt edneaton In return
for three yean la the army. Talks
have been given at moat of the high
schools by raembere of the reerniting
personnel, and all high- achools will
be visited prior to graduation date.
High school principals have been
very cooperative In arranging oppor-
tonitlee for recruten to explain the
educational advantages to be obtained
by an army enlistment
