From all re ports Sgt Jennings Is doing a smart bit of work while participating in aerial flighta In the Southwest Pa cific area. • • • • And we are Just as proud and happy as bis mother. Mrs. Minnie B. Jen nings, 20S Haile street, over the fact that Sgt. Dargan has been decorated with the air medal. I4was an award made in recognition of courageous serviee *to bis combat organisation, his fellow airmen, his country, his home and his mother. 0 0 0 * Dargan took part in sustained flight missions during which hostile con- ta'ct was probable and ezpdcted. These flighta included bombing mis sions against enemy installation, shipping and supply bases. Jennings but a whole flock of Jen; nings—plus everybody in Camden, feels proud of Dargan» • • • • Another of my old softball boys is also back in our midst He is Frank Oliver and he looks like a million dol lars. Frank is pretty much of a^man —really looks like a seasoned fighter. « • • • • • • • And when Mrs. Jennings received a letter from Oeneu* George C. Kenney of the Allied Air Forces of the South west Pacific Area she was really proud! For General Kenney in his letter said; “I would like to tell yon how genuinely proud 1 am to have men such as your son in tny com mand, and how gratified I am to know that young Americans with such cour age and resourcefulness are fighting our country's battle against the Jap anese aggressors. Legion Baseball Slate Is Given Big ReshuffKi^ A re-alignment of American Junior Legion baseball tMms that will par ticipate la the Southeastern sectional tournament which starts at Sumter August 14 and at Charleston August IS has been announced by the Leg ion’s National Americanization com mission. The rescheduling of states was made necessary because two states in the nation failed to enter compe tition .this year. South Carolina will replace West Virginia in Region 9 which also ln> eludes N(M*th Carolina, Virginia and Tenneasee. The Region B champion team will play at Charleston against champions of Region 8 which Include Mississippi, Georgia. Alabama, and Florida, and Region 7 which includes Kentucky, Ohio. Indiana and Michi gan. The Region 7 tournament will be held at Flint, Michigan, and the Reg ion 8 "playoff at Augusta. Sumter 111 Lead In Lower State L^on B^le The Sutoter Junior Legion team de feated the (Columbia Caps at Dreyfuss field in Columbia Monday night ,6 to 5 in a six inning fracas which was terminated by a downpour of rain. Columbia took a commanding lead in the eerly innings, posting two runs in the first md one each in the second and third and raising the total to 5 with a seoru In the fourth. In the meantime Sumter scorc^ a run in the second and added five in the fifth. The Gamecocks climbed all over Landrum, the Columbia ace, in the fifth and he was sent to the showers and Shealy took over. South- all started for Srater and worked four and a third Innings when.- Me- Catamn took over. The letter gets credit for the win. He retired the Caps in the one inning he pitched without a hit being made. The aecond game in the lower state title series was plsyed at Sumter Wednesday night. Colombia got, 6 bita and made one error. John Whitaker Sells Mill Street Home A record of conveyance^ has been listed in the office of the register of deeds whereby John Whitaker, Jr., and Mary W. Whitaker have sold a residence on Mill street to Msrion B. TVow. The property is located Just south of the John Whitaker home, which Is one of the historic landmarks of Camden, having at one time provided sleeping accommodations to General George Washington.
