One of tbe recent letters received by Mr. Kirkover comes from Mrs. Elisabeth Merrfliew Orianell of New York, famous aa a sports writer and author, and whose writings have ap peared in “The Rpur," “Town and Country,” ‘“The Sportaman," “Country Llfe'^ and "Polo.” She wrote under the name of "The Sportswoman.” also Mrs. Jorrocks” and under .her own name of OrlnnelL Mrs. Grinnell does not confine her writing to racing entirely, but to horses and hoaemanship in genmal. Sha has Judged horsemanship classes In many shows, including the Na tional event In the Madison Square Garden, New York City, She is also an expert In blood lines. A frequent visitor iu Camden, stopping at the Kirkwood hotel or with admiring friends, she was deeply Interested in all of the equestrian events and par ticularly the Carolina Cup races. In her letter to Mr, Kirkover, she says in part; “Speaking of racing and the Spring, dale course Immediately brought up a picture of those wonderful mfetings. What fun they were. The first ‘get- together’ after the long winter, and racing that wouldn’t be surpassed for the whole rest of the year. “I do know that Springdale had a very strong influence on tbe meetings following. It gave them a very high example to shoot at for one thing and encouraged them to get their horses ready for another, but it was what was behind the Springdale meeting that always impressed me. N<x federal funds are available for poedy persons of this type. At the recent seeslon of the General Assembly $460,000 was spin'oprlsted for general relief, to be apportioned to the counties on s population basla, using 1940 census fiimrea. The new law also provides that “tbe raepec- tive countlee shall not be required to match any of said general relief funds.” For aeveral years the state has appropriated $160,000 for this purpose, to match such amounta as the counties might provide trora'lllelr own funds. Thus the total available during the next fiscal year, $460,000, will he fifty percent more than the amdunt used duHng the current year. The county’s allotment from state funds for general relM for the year beginning July 1 will be $7,706, (quivalent to a tax of 2.6 mills on all taxable real esatte in the coupty. The amount available for this pn^^e during the present fiscal year from both state and county fnnds was $6,190.
