Still another construction program
has been announced for the Charles
ton, 8. C., Navy Tard with its selec
tion to bnlld two super-destroyers, ex
tending the yard’s construction pro
gram many months beyond the com
pletion of two destroyer tenders
awarded it last fall. Work on the
first of the destroyer-tenders Is now
underway.
’The super-destroyers, sometimes
called “pocket orabers’’ are estimat
ed to cost between five and six mil
lion dollars each. Their abe will be
22,000 tons. Thb additional oonatruc-
tlon brings the work program close to
920.000,000.00.
The new contract not only emphs-
sbed the need for skilled workers,
but b farther evidence of the long-
range employment they can anticipate
at Charlestoor ncoMndlng to nn. an
nouncement fi^ the navy yard.
A special call has been bsued for
electricians, machlnbts, pipefitters,
plnmbert, sheetmetal workers and
shlpfltters, with the goal of securing
more than five hundred workmen in
theee trade# in the southeast during
