History recounts that Samuel Mathk kept a most detailed dlary.^even dur ing the Revolutionary war. *H« was a relative of the Mickles. Statistics given this writer by Mrs E. C. Von Tresckow, show there are but 150 Confederate dead sleeping in Quaker cemetery. There are 10 sol diers who fought under the Stars and Bars who are in graves which bear the word JfuEknown. Another monument marks the rat ing place of General Bordenave Villi- pigue, who served under General Beauregard and who died in 1862 at Many from above the Maaon-Dtzon line_lie in this southern cemetery and every Memorial dpy, these graves, as well as those of the boys of the south, are decorated. Among some of the northern ,herobs” buried here are Colonel Pkiueas Tompkins, and Major Samuel, ^dgms, two brave Union offi cers who ^ed Camden and returned after the War to make their homes here. Dr. Edward Boykin, Colonel 7th Cavalry, C. S. A., sleeps here. He was the author of “The Falling Flag.” Close by to Little Arlington is a grave over which should fly the tri- .color of Prance. It' is that of Jar- John T. Another brave French s<ridier was named Meugy, who fought under Napoleon. Rndolpl^ is said to have repeatedly, when in' his cups, de clared that he was none other thSn Ney. Lemiere and Meugy became so angry over what they regarded as a profane claim that they caused Rbdolph to pack up and leave Cam den, It is said he located in North Carolina and is buried in that state. People up there who investigated his claim of being Ney assert it was a Paris studykigJ Just zmd true one. the six generals (^mden gave to the Confederacy and was also an ancestor of Cantey Villipigue, a hero of World War No. 1, who sleeps in Little Arlington. Generals J. B. Kershaw and John D. Kennedy, two others of the six generals, lie not far from the Richard Kirkland grave. In a nearby grave lies Captain ‘Al fred English Doby, who- but 24 yegrg of age, seryed as an aide de camp to General Kershaw and was killed in the Battle of the Wilderness in the War Between the States. It is related that Doby was in medicine when he heard that beloved South Carolina was in the throes of conflict, whereupon he hur ried back to America and Joined the colors. He became aide to General Kershaw. At the Battle of the Wil derness while reconnoitering wkh General Longstreet and others, his party was fired upon by Confederates. Captain Doby and his Q^erly, Marcus Baum, were instantly ' killed. The body of Marcus Baum lies in the Jewish cemetery adjoining- Quaker cemetery. Men who fought and died in the Mexican war knd who rest in Quaker cemetery include Lieut. James Willis (3antey, Jr., and Kehh Stuart Moffat. Lieut. Cantey of the Palmetto Regb ment was killed at Chapultepeo while leading a detachment of two com panies in advance of the regimenL His monument was elected by ti)e grateful citizens of Camen and Ker.* Shaw county. Ehr. George Todd, a Confederate soldier from Kentucky, whose sister, Mary, became the wife of Abraham Lincoln, is lUso buried in Quaker cemetery. During the war he was a surgeon in charge of Wayside Hospital in Camden, now known as Greenleaf Villa, the home of Attorney John Thomas Garrison, 64, of Cas satt, died at his homo Tuesday after noon after an Illness of one year. He was the eon of the late John T. and Mary Garrison and was a well-known farmer of Kershaw county. Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Celle Langley; three sons, Jim mie Garrison of Lancaster, Leroy Garrison, Navy, and Johnnie Garri son. U.S.A.; two daughters. Mrs. W. F. Langley of Camden, and Mrs. C. B. Owens of Kershaw; two step children, Steven Langley of Great Palls, and Paul iJingley of Rock Hill, and three sisters, Mrs. Dellia Boone of Kwshaw, Mrs. Bessie Raley of Camden, and Mfs. Interment was in the church cemetery. li This writer has spent many Inter esting hours in perusing the pages of Historic Camden. But mere reading does not give the real drama that features the history of this little South Carolina community. It mere ly whets one’s desire to know more and to get the real atmosphere from tbe lips of those who in turn had heard it from the lips of those- who lived during those stirring and his tory. making times. Camden school children should be given an opportunity of knowing the glory that Jies in the history of their community. Historic Camden should be made a “must” in history-classes. Tbe deeds of the sons and daughters of the Camden of yesteryears should be an inspiration to the growing youth of the community. The Camden •tory,. which aroused the interest and enthusiasm of a stranger, should be known word for word by every man, woman and child of the community.
