C., route 2. 39-41p A survey recently made by the Indiana highway com mission revealed that 90 per cent of the C gasoline ration card holders exceeded the 35-mile speed limit, their average road rat^ being 43.06 miles an hour. B card holders proved to be more observant oif regula tions than either A card or C card holders, their average K^intr /I(i H9. milpx an hour; with 82.5 per cent bettering 35. A card drivers averaged 41.42 mile^ ah 'hour, and 87.5 per cent of those checked were going more than the wartime limit. Eighty per cent of all Indiana drivers clocked were step ping on it a little too heavily, averaging 40.54 miles an hour, while visitors from other states averaged 46.22, 98 per cent of them exceeding the limit. These findings were based on 1,406 observations of motor car speeds over a five-day period. One explanation of the speed attributed to C card ftrold- ers may be that this class of driver is entitled to apply for new tires, and probably the drivers figured that if their shoes wore out they could get more, which may be a human, but not a patriotic, reaction.—The Columbia State. “LIFE’S LITTLE IRONIES” Of the ironies is that rice must be allotted to the citizens of South Carolina^—of South Carolina where “Seeds from Madagascar” of the finest quality on earth were raised. Rice, the “swamp crop,” was the main source of the wealth—and no-w rice to the South Caro linians, to the Lowcountryman especially, is a luxury of which _they must eat sparingly. .
