Malcolm Bryant has been heard from recently from North Africa, the first news heard from him since he sailed several mouths ago. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Miss Peach Is at present employed by the Charleston Free Library. Sgt. Hoop ner Is stationed at the Port of Em barkation, Charleston. The marriage will take place iu the near future. BRIDGE PARTY Mis. C. T. Baldwin, Garrison street, was hostess to the bridge club to which she belongs on Wednesday afternoon. Two tables wore in play with high score prizes being made by Mrs. Joseph Brunson and Mrs. DeLoache Sheorn. Mrs. Newell Wimberly was a special guest. The hostess served an ice course later iu the afternoon. MARY WHITAKER CELEBRATE8 HER NINTH BIRTHDAY * Miss Mary Whitaker celobrated her ninth birthday Saturday with a moving picture purty at the Camden theatre. Nine of her friends were invited and later entertained at Elliott's Soda Shop. Among those invited were Misses Betty Clarke. Pat Graham, Doris Watson, Mary Ianiise Ryan. Alice Oghurn, Mollsle doLoach, .Shannon Heath and Harriett Moore, of Charleston. Mary is the daughter of Lt. and Mrs. C. C. Whitaker, Jr., Lyttleton street. THAMES?DURHAM Miss Myrtle Mae Thames, of Camden, and Arthur T. Durham, of Greenville and Camden, were married Tuesday evening. May 11th, with Judge N. C. Arnett, officiating. The bride, a lovely brunette, attended Camden city schools. She Is the daughter of Mrs. T. J. Thames and the late Mr. Thames, and makes her home with Mr. and Mrs. Haskell Hudson. Mr. Durham, the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Durham, of Greenville, has been with the maintenance department at the Southern Aviation School for over two years and is very popular. He attended school in Greenville. CADETS AND DATES ENTERTAINED WITH DANCE Fun was had Saturday night, when Mrs. Annie H. Boykln. assisted by i Mrs. A, C. McKain, Misses Cary Guth; rie and Cleon Pitts, entertained the Cadets from the Southern Aviation, School and their dates. [_ Dancing was enjoyed in the spacfhus rooms of the lovely club house and refreshments were served at a | late hour. Roses from the various rose gardens were given and added a festive note to the occasion. The Cadet club house is one of the most popular places in Camden and a convenient and nice place for the cadets to entertain their relatives and friends. Mrs, Boykin, the gracious hostess, is charming to all visitors. BOY SCOUT MEETING A meeting of Scout Troop No. 38, was held Monday night. May 17th, at the Scout hut. Before the meeting soft-ball was played. The meeting was called t? order with the scout oath and pledge of allegiance to the flag. A new rule was passed that If a Scout is absent three consecutive meetings he is automatically dropped from the troop, but can be reinstated by the Scoutmaster. It wap decided to clean up the hut and buy a troop flag. A very interesting talk was given by Mr. Miller. The meeting was closed with the Scoutmasters benediction. Thirteen Scouts were present. Vandiver, Commandant of Cadets, 64th AAFFTD, Southern Aviation School, was honored on his birthday Saturday, May 16th, with a surprise supper party given by Mrs. Vandiver at their home on Fair a tree t. Twenty-five guests were Invited, which Included officers of the army personnel and their wives. A treasure hunt was held before supper, which ended In the honor guest finding a papier-mache birthday cake, topped with paper candles and tissue paper bows holding numerous foolish gifts and toys. Supper was served buffet style from a beautifully appointed table In the dining room. Assisting the hostess In entertaining and serving were, Mrs. A. W. Habeeb. Mrs. M. A. Clay and Mrs. Gertrude Zemp. Masses of roses and other summer flowers were used through-1 out the house. AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY MEETS Mrs. M. E. Forte received 16 members of the American Legion Auxiliary In her home last Friday afternoon /or their May meeting. The meeting was opened lu regular form. The president asked the chairmen of all committees to get their yearly reportB In hy the middle of June so that all records might he sent to headquarters. A nominating committee was appointed for the 1943-44 officers who will tako office In September. 'The committee Is Mrs. Jack Mullen, Mrs. Wiley Sheorn and Mrs. James Gandy. The local unit nominated Mrs. C. M. Proctor of Rock Hill, for department president of the Auxiliary for 1943-44. Mrs. Anne Grayson, State American Legion Auxiliary president, complimented the Camden unit in a recent letter, saying "The reports are splendid and make me realize the fine work you are doing." After the regular closing the meeting was adjourned. The hostess served a 'delicious salad course. Saturday, May 29 is Poppy Day. Buy a poppy and help a disabled war veteran. COMMENCEMENT EXERCI8E8 BEGIN AT BLANEY SCHOOL The 1943 Commencement exercises begins Sunday, May 23, at 4 p. m.. when Rev. J. Ross Johnson, district superintendent of the Sumter District of the Methodist churfih, will preach the sermon to the graduating class. Graduating exercises will be held May 27, at 9:30 p. in. In the High school auditorium. Ten seniors expect to receive State High School diplomas.
