P. DuBose, Jr., | announced the appointment of a 'special project" committee consist- j ing of Henry G. Carrison. general chairman; S. W. VanDnndingham, C. P. DuBose. Jr.. and John Whitaker, Jr.. representing the Chamber of Commerce; W. T. Redfearn and U. N. Myers, representing the county; p. N. McCorkle and J. K. McKain, representing the city of Camden; Dr. jCarl A. West and Dr. A. W. Humphries, representing the county medical unit, and Henry Savage. Jr.. the legal group. President DuBose stated that all appointees are qualified members of the Chamber of Commerce, and If the project this committee is to handle is successfully completed, it will be a distinct feather in the cap of the commercial organization. The directors elected R. W. Marshall manager of the Newberry store, to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of M. B. Burns. A. C. McKain is to fill the unexpired term af Perry Langston and Harry D. Kirkover to fill 'the unexpired term of John K. deLoach. Messrs. Burns and deLoach have gone into the service of the nation. The Chamber secretary reported on a number of projects which the office has been handling of late and presented a resolution, which adopted by unanimous vote, calls upon the general public of the city and county to be wary of fraudulent schemes and rackets which are a pat t of the war conditions. The secretary reported that the WPA recreational program which the Chamber has sponsored, has paid out in salaries and equipment over $3,000 in Camden. Added to this total are many additional hundreds for miscellaneous Items, the money for which is expended in Camden. Jackson Creek Church Destroyed The Jackson Creek Baptist church, located about nine miles from Columbia on the Camden highway, was virtually destroyed by tiro about noon Wednesday the pastor, the Rev. E. V. Vaughan. said today. "Only by the heroic effort of passersby" was the church furniture and parsonage saved," the pastor said, praising persons who aided In removing valuables from the building. pntruinr mid-week services will bo held as usual in tho parsonage, after which a special meeting of deacons and trustees will bo held to consider plans for the construction of a new building.
