The revival of their use brings great hazards as coinpared with many years ago when there were very few automobiles, and not much vehicular traffic of any kind Today in the age of motor cars, tlie use of bicycles is of great concern to those who drive autos. Whllt* Automobiles operate In accordance with strict rules, many bicycle riders observe no rules at all. .and exercise none of the precautions which would shield them from harm. And when a liike rider is Involved in an accident with an auto. +he rider usually is seriously, if not fatally injured. Bicyeilists can avoid danger and injuries if they will use safety precautious and obey traffic regulations. Drivrrs of automobiles realize that young America must have its pleasure, and they want to see that pleasure Is obtained safely through the proper use of bicycles. The following precautions for bicyclists will aid in avoiding accidents to themselves and grief to their famlles and friends: Obey the traffic rules ?especially red lights and stop signs. Give hand signals for stopping and turning. Always have proper lights or red reflectors on your bike. Don't "hook on" to autos. and don't t ide too fast. Don't "double-head" anyone. It's too dangerous. Keep out of heavy traffic. Give pedestrians the right of way. Look out for cars pulling out of parking spaces. Don't weave In and out of traffic Keep both hands on the handlebars. Veteran Conductor Retires From Service Captain McCune (better known an j "Mark") veteran conductor of the Southorn railway, Marion and Camden division, will mako his last run on trains 35 and 3ti, between Hock Hill and Marion, on November 39, and therefore will Join the ranks of the men who refer to the past years, .as "ven 1 was a conductor on the Southern". Mr. Albergotti is perhaps the last of (tie railroaders who began working on the old Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago railroad, after it was taken over by the South Carolina and Georgia railroad and began his service on the Three C's in 1X95, and during all the years since lias been a familiar figure In railroad circles between Columbia, Camden, Hock Hill, Blacksl)iirg and Marion. He has' passed through the weather Just traveling between stations only a few minutes apart, or going long distances. He has seen hundreds of his fellow railroad workers?conductors, engineer**, firemen, baggagemen, express men, station agents, mall clerks, brakemou, trackmen, bridge builders and ail ?ho| other classes of railroad workers? come and go. Among the oldest engineers who have pulled his train back and forth are George Marring, "Yankee" 1'helps, Cliff Lee, Pearson, Shiver, "Hubby" Dunlap, George Hum* niersley, Lloyd McNair, Harry MeNair. Joe Crow. Jack Crow, Ben Logan and many others, some of whom are still living and working, and others who have gone the way of all flesh, and have long since blown their last station and pulled Into the station wile re all good railroaders finally land He began working on the S. C. and G.. in July 1X87. Captain Albergotti came to the Three C's just about the time Win* tbrop college had gotten well under way, and he 'handled" many qf the college girls graduating from the big college, as they went home for weekends on Fridays and roturned to books on Sunday night, and also ou occasions when the college was starling its sessions in the fall of the year, and carried the gowned graduates along with their baggage, back to their homes In the early summer. "Ami 1 expect that the last few years 1 have been riding some of their grandchildren." remarked Captain Albergotti, with a reminiscent smilo of happy recollections. He came from a railroading family. His grandfather helped to build the first tracks of the old original South Carolina railroad in 1853. and ev^br since there has been a member of his family on the payroll of the railroad' down to his retirement after finishing his run Wednesday night?104 years. To bo sure retirement will give the captain a new experience. He'll no longer bo responsible for bis trains and the passengers they haul, and it will be new in his life to go to bed at night without an alarm clock beside his bed, to tell him that he must get going in order to be on time to go out. with his train exactly on time. He'll miss the warm greetings of his myriads of friends along tile Mno^ as he stopped at the stations along the way, and possibly for a little while He will feel a bit lost at not hearing the everlasting noise of the car wheels as they pass over rail joints with tlx familiar click, and the loudr-T?miises as the cars rotled over the switches. Also he will miss the blowing of tile steam whistle as ill. He has produced thousands of them, and lias sold game cocks all over the I'nited States, and shipped others to Mexico and Latin-American countries, as well as to England and wherever else sportsmen gather around cocktng mains.
