And so we say. as all In Camden will echo?that nice new shining car that was presented to John Vlllepigue at the football banquet last Friday night at the Camden Hotel, was well deserved and the board of trustees Is to be complimented upon the thoughtfulness of the timely gesture. And what a banquet that was that host Jack Nettles dished up. A real dinner with turkey and all the trimmings served at a table that was resplendent with the gold and black of the Camden colors. The menu was HO appetizing that everybody u&. til we had fears for the speaking program that was to follow the gaatronomlcal feats. Woll, anyway, Coach John received the keys of the gift-car from W. Robin Zemp, chairman of the school trustees and for once ,we saw the Camden grid mentor nervous. And what an applause went up when the belcvod coach accepted the keys. One hundred payers and friends gathered around the fine table to pay homage to one of the greatest grid teams In Camden high school history. And mixed in the potpurrl of exciting ev-entB that took place during the two hours or more that the boys and girls were in session was the announcement of the election of Jack Marshall as 1939 Bulldog football captain. And did Jack got a big hand! We'll say so. Professor Richards came In for some lusty cheers when he rose to apeak and he certainly high-lighted the speaking program with some remat'KS directed as a tribute to Camden fans. Camden players and the line fellows who worked with John Vlllepigue as the board of strategy or sometimes referred to as the "brain trust." I Douglas Lynch, one of the finest blocking backs we have ever seen in' action, was awarded the blocking trophy tendered by the Corner Book Store?the award being made on the basis of votes cast by his team mates. Coach Vlllepigue presented tho trophy and Doug was accorded a big ovation from the crowd. And smiling Jack Nettles, seriouseyed E. Clarksou Rhame, and that eminent hustler, J. Blakeney Zemp, were also accorded tribute and substantial recognition for their interest and activity in connection with the football program. Tho Rev. Brvce Herbert, of the Lyttleton Street Methodist church, was toastmaster for the evening and did a magnificent job. Responses to the nod froYn Mr. Herbert were made by Mayor F. N. McCorkle, an ardent supporter of the football team; Jack Nettles, Clarksou Rhame, Blake Zemp and others. We think that the tribute that Coach Vlllepigue paid to George West ?the retiring captain of the Bulldogs ?was one of the finest and most timely we have listened to in a long long time. George has been an outstanding football player?the "best r have ever coached." said the coach, but not only that?but "George West has been a shining example of what we would describe as being 'An All American high school boy.' " High ideals, fine personality and a splen did athlete?he is a boy that all of Chmden and South Carolina can wel be proud of. Not to miss the part the fair sex played ? we want to say that it was fine to have the girls of the cheering group present and the response by Miss Khetta Blakeney to the call of the chair was splendid And in parting let us extend con gratulations to Hotel Camden and all who had anything to do with making tiie affair so outstanding, pleasant and?appetizing! Hellmund, former chef of Hobkirk, is in charge of the culinary department, ably assisted by John Borrini of Camden. * I?< - - - ' . ~ I YELLOWJACKET8 DEFEAT RAMBLERS BY 7-6 8CORE Tho Camden Yellow jackets rode to an Impressive 7 to 6 win over the Ramblers before a crowd of some one thousand polo fans who gathered under sunny skies at the No. 2 field Sunday afternoon. The Jacket foursome jumped to an early lead as Tupper and Boykln split the uprights, with long shots in the first and second chukkers. Tupper rode through tho Rambler defense again in the early minutes of the third period to counter on an angle shot. A goal by Robertson late In / * the same period made the score 3-1 as they came out for the fourth chukker. Tho Ramblers threatened when Bates scored on a beautifully executed belly shot, but PuBose .sent the willow sailing high over the center of the posts on a shot from midfleld, and again with a reverse shot from in front of tho goal that put the Jackets out In front by a 5 to 2 score. The Ramblers offense snapped to life in the fifth chukker, the blue-clads fighting desperately to close the gap. Lightfoot uncorked a beauty from midfield that sailed within ten feet of the goal from where Robertson pushed it through for a score. Theso two Rambler aces pulled the same combination minutes later and the Jacket lead was threatened for the first, time. The Rambler ponies tired under the terrific pace, however, and Tupper scored for the Jackets as the period ended. The final chukker turned out to he a thriller. Bates scored quickly on a long shot and Light foot tallied shortly after the face-off on a belly shot from in front of the goal. The Ramblers had their Jacket brothers on the run and as the final whistle sounded, Lightfoot sent a long one sizzling up the field, only to hit a goal post and bounce harmlessly into the end zone.
