Its performer#1 and other employes are out of work. They chose to let the circus go home rather than accept reduced wages. The management said that it was losing too much money and that it was vital that expenses should be curtailed. More than a week the circus was lu Scrauton, Fa., and then It entrained for Sarasota, Its several trains passing through Charleston. In a time when the federal government spends prodigally for the unemployed and the uuemployables the circus equestrians and eQuastrienues, the trapeze performers, the acrobats and the tumblers, the "rasor backs" and others have joined the unemployed. The question has already been ashed: Will Mr. Harry 1* Hopkloa come to their relief with his WPA funds? Will the abecedarians back up these circus people In quitting, because the circus could not afford to continue their high wages? The WPA may come to the assistance of the unemployed circus performers and workers, but the management of the circus will have to maintain animals and equipment in Sarasota out of private funds. Not yet is there any intimation that performers and workers will change their tnluds and bring the' circus back om the road. The circus season does not end until November, so that the combination of the Hingling BrothersBarnum & Bailey has folded up in mid-season. 'A great qircus is a costly enterprise, It must sustain Itself from day to day. When It loses, it loses heavily. In theBe latter years costs have mounted. The circus cannot divide among its employes what it falls to take In the ticket-wagon. It must suffer a steady loss iu quarters, but thut loss, It seems, will be less than if the tour had been continued with the wage scales as high as they are. The circus takes a licking, but so do All the employes who have left it. In circumstances, performers and workers have deliberately Joined the unemployed. There is no profit to them In their strike.?Charleston News and Courier. Spanish loyalist troops captured 11 Ge. .ii&nu along with 11 -Spanish insurgent troopers on a roadway Monday.
