County Chairman A W Hl'MPHRlES, Secretary Charles CI Powell, chairman of the North Carolina unembploymont commission. with a salary of $5.f>00 per yoaf was very much shocked when he found that his mother, aged 6t> years, had been on the WPA rolls of Granville county, and said that her name would be removed at once. ^ IN MEMORIAM Mrs. Janie Mae Croft, beloved wife of Cleveland Croft, was called to her eternal home on June 14. at 8 p. m. The end came in the Camden hospital surrounded by anxious relatives and friends who were sorely grieved at her passing. Mrs Croft was a wohle-hearted. church worker She was a member of Sandy Grove church and had her class of small children that filled a large place in her heart. She could always be trusted for a cheerful word We fe?-l that all was done that could he done by physicians and nurses and friends for her recovery. FJven after all this, we have been left alone insofar as her beloved husband and precious little daughter. The interment was also in Baltimore. Deceased was fifty-four years of age and was horn in Nashville, Lithuania. He came to this county when a young man and had resided lis liishopville for thirty live year*. Mr Cahn waa for many year* connected with the business life of ilishville, but bad for the pa#t live years conducted a livestock business in Bumter. Brannun, of Columbia, related tonight how Bobble, his two-year-old Kngllsh Springer spaniel saved his life a few hours earlier by pulling him from the swirling currents of the Congaree river. Brannou said he fell out of a boat in the middle of the river about five miles below here. Bobble, on the river bank with others of a fishing party, was told by Heyward Lxjvett to "Go and get your master" when It waa evident Draunon was in trouble. He went. Brannon said "I tried to keep afloat" after I fell out of the boat. "The water got all In my noao and eyes and everything was topsy-turvy. Then the water knocked me against a stump. I went down, straight down, and I don't know how far. It must have been to the bottom bocause it seemed like a year before 1 got to the surface again. "I was choking and strangling? didn't have a bit of tight left in me, a:;d I was Just about to go down again when I felt something grab my collar. 1 grabbed back at whatever It was and found It was Bobbie. "I relaxed and helped as well as 1 could by paddling a little I was pretty feeble but he just paddled back toward shore, 1 r>0 yards away, dragging me with him. ' I weigh about 180 pounds and Bobble about 60 How he made It I don't know. I never was so glad to feel land under my feet as I was when 1 finally reached shore. I never would have got there without Bobbie." Brannon said Bobble was a retriever and was used to bringing back ducks, geese and other game on hunts. "Maybe ho'thought I was a duck," he grinned. He added that "I have always said 1 wouldn't take %2~> for him (the dog) But money can't buy him now. I didn't know he was that much devoted to me." Saturday, June 11. 193S. the committee arranged the Itinerary, fixed the assessments for county officers and sot the date of closing of entries, filing of pledges and paying assessments for noon of June 30. A motion was made calling for the executive committee to supply the County Chairman with a list of managers ami polling places on or before July 1. 1938. The executive committee requested that each club make a collection of $ 1 00 for each delegate representing his club for the Democratic National campaign fund.
