If the town you wish to call is not listed in the front of your telephone directory, just ask your "long distance" operator. She will gladly quote rates to any point. Burgos, "capital" of rebel Hpain, while in*w to the earn of present day obHHivm, ban played an Important part in the Spain of the pant, nay* a bulletin from the Washington, I). headquarters of the National (jeographlc Society Burgos, with only 32,000 inhabitants. rlaeM from the heurt of a rolling plateau about 130 miles due north of Madrid, continues the bulletin. Ah u capital of the province of Burgos, it wan 1101 umtty a quiet city which the hard-working farmers, BhepherdH and foresters In the province uHod ua their inurket place. Irrigated fields from green patchwork along the valley of the Arlanzon river but much of the district surrounding the city Jh urld and barren like purls of the tableland of Mexico. Whore water i? available, however, good crops thrive?chiefly gruiiiH and chick peaH. I I While Burgos may have no boast an to high rank umong urban centera on the Iberian peninsula, it in rich in history and in architectural treasures, j Until 1087, when the royal residence wan moved to Toledo, it was the capital of Old Castile. It is hinted that the crumbling castle above the city is one of the main reusons for the name of Castile. Even after the transfer of the royul residence, Burgos was still the scene of much royal pomp, splendor, and treachery. Several kings were crowned there, and some were born within its walls. Perhaps Burgos' most notorious son was King Pedro the Cruel, who was reputed to decorate his rooms with the heads of his victims. Columbus, returning from his second expedition to the fabled New World, was welcomed by Fernando and Isabella in that palatial residence of old Burgos, the Casa de Cordon. The building still spreads its stone front across one side of the Plaza de Libertad. Royal marriages attracted to Burgos the pageantry of medieval chivalry from more than one nation. England sent a 12th-century princess there to become a Spanish queen, and later came an English king and a French duke to claim Spanish wives. In Burgos was born El Cid, the national hero of Spain, in the struggle to reconquer the country from the Moors. The hilltop castle, then a magnificent stronghold, was the scene of his marriage to Ximena, who is buried with him in the cathedral. One of the town's saddest days was that of their hero's return, when all doors were closed against him by the Jealous king's command, and the grieving populace had to do their hero-worshiping silently from their I windows. Remnants of warlike days survive in the city. The castle, demolished by the Freifch, after it had successfully resisted the forces of the mighty Wellington, flaunts its ruins from the hill. Four fortified gates remain, as well as a pleasant walkway, called the Paseo de dos Cubos, the Promenade of the Tubs, because it passes a row of tub-like circular bastions of the old wall. On the outskirts of Burgos stands the convent of l.as Huelgas, to which only noble women were admitted. Its abbess for 5t?0 years tanked second onjy to the queen of Spain, and had power of life and death, "the gallows and the knife," over all who came within her jurisdiction. [Ventilated Henhouse Better and Cheaper ( A ventilated type of poultry house which Is getting excellent results, was ' designed by D. L. Sowell, of Camden, ' and, according to P. H. Gooding, poulj try specialist of Clemson College ExI tension Service, should prove to bo a most desirable type to be used in the southeastern Btates. Mr. Sowell was using the shed-roof type of house, but decided that his flock was not getting a sufficient amount of air. Accordingly, he ventilated his house by tearing out the dropping boards and placed the roosting poles about 12 inches above the floor. He put in wire framing below the roosting poles in order to keep the birds out of the droppings. He next dpened up the back side of the house from the top of the roosting poles to the eaves, arranging ventilators in such a manner that they could be closed during the winter months. This ventilated type of poultry house saved Sowell considerable lumber which he was using for dropping boards. It further saved the cost of the windows wh&h he was using in order to give light beneath the drop! phjg board, and it enabled him to j keep his birds cooler in the summer.
