Coward appeared in good condition, although he said he whh weuk from going without food since he became lost from hla hunting companion six days ago during the tail end of the Florida hurricane which awept this section. Coward said ho lost his way because of the high water in the vast swamp The storm Hooded the creeks and ponds which dot the almost Impenetrable cypress jungle for miles. The shallow water rolled over his tracks, erasing them, he said. The high water, Coward said, effused him to have to sleep in trees at night. The cries of the McUee man wore heard late yesterday ua he wandered just beyond the reach of rescuers, who had sonrohod for him nearly a week. A few hours later rescuers managed to reach him over the flooded floor of the swamp. Would-be rescuers had worked day and night to And him and were joined yesterday by Hoy Smith, Atlanta aviator, whose plane, equipped with a loudspeaker, plied back and forth over the swamp, attempting to guide the lost man to solid ground. For many hours Benrchers on the ground could hear (Howard's calls, but they were echoed to such an extent by the fhickly growing cypresa trunks and lush swamp growth that they were useless aa a guide to his whereabouts. Governor Olin I). Johnston had sent a National Guard officer and a state j constable to aid sheriff's deputies and | civilians in the search for Coward. Rescuers said Coward had with1 stood the ordeal remarkably. He is naturally a robust man, weighing 220 pounds.
