C., Jan. 16.?When .Sheriff Burrs came into his office here smelling definitely of alcohol, officials and associates looked askance?'but the sheriff said he could explain. He with several deputies went out to raid stills and they found one of 50 gallons capacity and destroyed it. One of the raiders went until they found another near a highway. It was a steam outfit and was flanked by 10 barrels of beer. The sheriff and deputies were destroying this when Barre fell in onen barrel of the beer mash. He got soaked 100 per cent.?but said the alcohol stayed on the outside. i The South Carolina railroad commission has sent an order to the Southern Bell Telephone company to reduce its rate at all exchanges in this state 20 per cent, and the surcharge for French desk instruments from 50 cents to 25 cents. This action followed lengthy hearings by "the commission, and the commission says the new rates will give the company a return of from six to seven per cent. Long distance tolls are not affected The company is given 20 days to put ?the reduced rates into effect. What the telephone company will do about it was not announced at once. The funeral , was held on Sunday afternoon near Chapin, in Newberry counity, of John William Snmner, a widely known veteran of the Civil war, aged 05 years. I Crime Is Prevalent Most Among Y oung Columbia, Jan. 16.?Crime in South Carolina is most prevalent among younger people, J. N. Peartnan, retiring superintendent of the state penitentiary, said in his annual report to the legislature. "The most deplorable /apt," Pearman said, "is that there are 861 of a total population of 1,262 under the age of 80 years and a large proportion of thie number are young white men." An attached record showed that 275 inmates of the penitentiary are under 20 years old, and only 166 are 41 years of age or older. Approximately 602 men and women, more than half the prison population las?t year, were convicted of some form of stealing, Pearman said. He interpreted this as indicative of hard times and laxer ideas of "mine and thine." The population of the penitentiary practically doubled itself during the past four years, the report set forth. There wore 687 prisoners in 1929, 769 in 1930, 981 in 1981, and 1,292 in 1932. The largest group of convicts were serving from ocne to five year sentences. There were 177 prisoners under sentence for life. The prison population consisted of 638 negro .men, 555 white men, 55 negro women and 14 white women, the report continued. The largest number, 150 came from Charleston county. Calhoun county sent up the smallest contingent, two. Vocations of the prisoners as listed 'by them included u "golf teacher,'** and an "Indian doctor." There were also two florists, a coppersmith, *1 marine engineer, a radWoperator, and a prisoner who candidly announced his occupation as "bootlegger." Laborers, farmers arfd textile operatives .contributed largely to the ranks of the prisoners.! Pearman resigned a si superintendent of the penitentiary defective January 1. The penitentiary board has elected .Malcolm Scarborough superintendent. Charles Harmon was shot to death "at Gaffney \at the heme of Dave Revels,, and the coronet's jury ordered Charies Kendrick held for his murder. Both men are just over 30 years old. Kendrick claims self-defense. Both men have*policq record#, hut the cause of this shooting was not ascertained. Kendrick served part of an eightyear sentence in the North Carolina penitentiary several years ago for i participation in the slaying of Frank j Butler, of Burke county. About - a {year ago, he was shot and wounued j by a Gaffney policeman. Harnrion was shot in the thigh about three months ago, and in a shooting a J shooting a month ago he was sprinkled with birdshot. * [ Governor Pinchot of Pennsylvania, appeared on the floor of the senate at Harrisburg on TueSaay and requested the body to discipline Senator George D. Reed, for art attack made on the governor's wife on the floor of the senate "Monday night. B. lewder' of Charlotte was ar rested and placed in the county jail < and word was received here that 1 Claude Copeland of thia city was held in the jail at (Camden after be- ( tng pursued by Officer Gardner out of this city, being eventually arrested at Pontiac by Camden police. Lowdcr was seen by Officers Gardner and Kingstaff as he was entering the city and the Charlotte man immediately took to llight on seeing the local officers who were headed south at the time while Lowder Was headed north. The chase led from Main street down Elm and then down Catawba street. On rounding I^eroy street corner Lowder was going at such a rapid rate that ho left the road And he abandoned his car in u cqtton field. He was found in a reclining position a few minutes afterward by Officer Angus Uugins who had joined the chase. In the automobile which Lowdcr was driving was found more than 100 gallons of liquor. It was the biggest haul made for some time. Word from the chief of police at Camden was to the effect that Claude Copeland of this city was arrested at Pontiuc with a charge of reckless driving being placed against him. It was not said as to whether liquor was ! in the car but he was suspected of carrying liquor when he was chased by Officer James Gardner Mr. .Gardner started in pursuit of Copeland near Brooklyn and the chase led down High-way 26. This man was driving a V-8 Ford and he was able to outrun the enr driven by Mr. Gardner, although the latter has a car which is high ge&ved. The second chase took place but a short time after Lowder was arrested and both were witnessed by a number of people. According to word from the Camden police Copeland hit another car somewhere in the vicinity of Blaney but kept Otf going. He is alleged to have struck a Packard car doing considerable damage to the fenders.? Lancaster News. DANIEL GABRIEL FAHRENHEIT Inventor of Thermometer Was Typical Peck's Bad Boy Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, the man who invented the mercury thermometer, and whose name has been pcr' petuated throughout the English( speaking- world fop the pSVt two centuries "in connection with the invention, was apparently a typical Peck's bad boy in his youth, writes G. D. in Tycos. This fact is indicated in a letter dated January 21, 1707, which was recently found in the archives of -the City of Danzig, Germany. According to the letter, young Fahrenheit, at the age of 21, was causing his guardians so much trouble that the aid of the iCity Council was requested to aid in shipping him to the Dutch East Indies. The plan was not successful. The letter, addressed to the council reads: "We, who have been named as t the guardians of the minor children of the late Daniel Fahrenheit, have sent his son, Daniel Gabriel, a minor, to Amsterdam, by his own consent, to serve in an office, in the hope that he would < learn to conduct himself properly. But he has behaved regrettably that, in order to protect the interest of his brotherq and sisters, we have been ob- j liged to sequester part of his capital, 1 and have requested him through hie patron to turn a new leaf. "But he has paid no heed, he has reeumed his former practices, so we have been put to not a little trouble j and pains to try to bring about a change for the better in his mode of * life, but without being able to do any- * thing with him.
