Landed In Jail 1 Afterjjong Chase J. W, Georgia negrQ man, was lodged in the (Lee county jail last Thursday by Rural Policeman Paul Bradley after a forty-mile chase which began in Lynchburg and ended i in Biahopville. Sanders Kane, colored, of near i Lynchburg, committed * suicide hi at I February and Glasper heard of it in some way and saw an opportunity to j make some money. ^ Kane was reputed to be one of the wealthiest negroes in lice county. Glasper Cam? to Roland Kano, son of Sanders, and informed hifh that his father had buried $60,000 and that he, Glasper, could find it. He dug up several pieces of money, no doubt planted for tho occasion and then said his powers had decreased and that he i would have to have a machine that would cost a thousand dollars, five j hundred down and five hundred when it arrived in the post office in Lynchburg. Rqland paid the $500 and the "machine" came C, O. D. $600. The postmaster's suspicions were aroused when Glasper came to Lynchburg and mailed a letter to Kane. Bradley was notified and the chase resulted. A practically new Studebaker sedan was also taken.? Bishopville Messenger. STATE'S SMALLEST ACREAGE j Fewest Acreages of Cotton This Year In Nearly Half Century Columbia.?The government ^estimate of 1,773,000 acres of cotton in cultivation in South Carolina on July 1 is 10 per cent less than last year and the smallest in the state since the middle '80s, Frank O.. Black, agricultural statistician for South Car- j olina of the Department of Agricul-' ture, said Saturday. "The state's largest, acreage was that of 1918," Bb^ck said, "when 3,-^* j 040,000 acres were planted. As a resuit of the decline in price and the advent of the boll weevil in the early '20s bhe planted acreage fell to 1,866,000 in 1923, but rose again to about 2,700,000 in 1925 and 1926. >- *<From this point there has been a gradual decline until this year's acreage is the lowest in almost half a century. ???-? . "The percentage decrease has been greater in the lower than in the upper half of the state. 'South of a line drawn roughly from upper McCormicfc to middle Horry the acreage d<ecrease is about 15 per cent and approximately 5 per cent north of this line. _ i "The first forecast of probable outturn will be as of August 1/' Black announced, "and released on August 9. At this time the acreage base will be the 1,773,000 planted less than th,e 10-year average abandonment of 2.5 per cent." Triplets Born To Couple A large number of births including triplets which arrived at the home of' Mr. and Mrs.. T. R. Tinman at Heath Springs were registered in 1 Lancaster and vicinity over the week ' end. The new arrivals in the Tinman j family include t<vo boys and a girl. One boy weighed 4 1-2 (pounds, the other boy four pounds and the girl 3 1-2 pounds. All three are hale and hearty and the mother is also doing well. The parents Wave not as yet | decided what the three shall be named.?Lancaster News. I Over 1,200 drivers licenses have been suspended in South Carolina i since the law against drunken drivers went into effect a year ago, an aver- t age of about four a day. Governor Pinchot of Pennsylvania, has made a personal appeal to motorists to be more careful about killing game on the highways with their cars. He says that careless motorists are killing too much valuable game. Es- | timates show that 100,000 rabbits and several thousand pheasants are killed annually by automobiles.
