Prevention of Diphtheria
Statistics from the United States
Public Health Service show that diphth^ijiu
wig on the increase during the
month of November as compared to
the number of cases for a like period
a year ago. In consideration of the
fact that the disease is preventable,
such should not be the case. JOvery
effort has been made to educate tho
public and impress all health agencies
with the importance of protection of
children from six months of ago to
six years of ago against diphtheria.
From the latter age the individual
establishes an increasing natural immunity,
hence it is not as necessary
to administer the toxoid or toxinanti-toxin
then as it is in the younger
children. This accounts for tho
fact that about eighty per cent of
^ the cases occur between tho ages ot
two and five years. All physician#1
are urged to bring to the attention
of thoir clients tho importance of
prevention among young children,
and all parents and guardians are requested
to comply with the suggestion
that every child should be protected

Lincoln, Neb., and a lieutenant of A1
Capone, recently offered to return
$900,000 in bonds, J>art of a $2,500,000
bond theft in Lincoln two or three
years ago, provided he bo released
from prosecution. The County attorney
rejected the proposition, saying

case with a criminal.
A .football team composed of convicts
at Sing Sing prison on ^unday

Naval militia. The convicts won by
a score of 33 to 0. Alabama Pitts,
quarterback for the convicts, scored
five touchdowns of the game. There
were 450 paid admissions and each of
the 150 visitors was "frisked" as they
say at Sing Sing.

from the wreck of the Annie

The annual report of Postmaster
General Drown, as submitted to coa^
gress, showed a record deficit in
operating costs of $146,0(510,189, almost
$48,000,000 greater than the doflcit
of the previous fiscal year. As
a way out of the increasing deficit
the postmaster general recommends
that congress raise the letter postage
rate from 2 to 3 cents and estimates
that on the present volume this increase
would raise an additional $50,000,000
a year. Already the department
is asking the interstate commerce
commission ' for a revision upward
of parcel post rates.
Governor Albert C. Ritchie, of
Maryland, in Chicago on Monday, was
given a boost for the Democratic
presidential nomination. Some of his
admirers coined this as a slogan for
the Maryland governor, "Get rich
with Ritchie."
A gang of Detroit boys,. 14 to 16
years of age, had n formal trial of

was found gulity and shot to
death by one of the trial court. The
dead boy was 15 and his slayer is 14.
