Two days before Christmas, South
Carolina will open bidg on $10,000,000
of new bonds and notes, the money to
be spent on highways next year. This J
issue will make a total of $35,000,000
Tor highways under the $66,000,000
act of 1929. Governor Blackwood
and Ben M. Sawyer, chief highwaycommissioner,
went. to New York,,
studied the bond market, and tele- j
phoned the treasurer of the highway j
commission to advertise for bids on,
the new bonds which are to be dated
December 31. They are to mature
annually, $500,000 in 1939 to 1948,
and $1,000,000 in each of the succeeding
five years.
Police of Berlin on Saturday arrested
August "Little Angy" Del
Gracio of New York, and seized almost
a ton of narcotics.

The Rhodes scholars nominated
for 1932 for South Carolina are F.
Carlisle Roberts, of Columbia, a law
student at the state university, and
William S. Bethea, of Latta, a Wof-ford
college senior.
Miss Ruby Smith, girl cashier at
a movie theater in Greenville, R. L.
Dickinson, her brother-in-law, and
Walter E. Bolen, are under arrest for
the robbery of the box office at the
theater1 last week, staged as if by
bandits.
Wallace McBurney ,Sloan, whose
funeral was held at Columbia oh
Wednesday afternoon, was the last
surviving attache of the famous Wallace
house, and a former mayor of
Columbia for two terms. He died
the previous night of double pneumonia.
He was born in Pendleton
7(9 years ago, and went to Columbia
in 1865. He studied law, but went
into merchandising instead of practicing,
but soon after was appointed
chief deputy internal revenue collector
which place he held for two terms,
and then was elected to the legislature.
Later he was in business, and
agent for the Seaboard railroad at
Columbia, and then was in the internal
revenue office again for 18" years,
lie saw Columbia revive into its present
condition, for he arrived there a
few weeks after the city was burned.

1932, to March 1st, 1932. All persons
owning real estate or personal property
muet make returns of the K?me
within said period, as required by
law, or be subject to a penalty of 10
