Confederate veterans of South Carolina
will be held at Rock Hill, June
17, 18 and 10. A. E. Lewis, of Anderson,
is adjutant general of the

Craig of Chesterfield and Brig. Gen.
R. D. Galbraith of Spartanburg, command
the two South Carolina brigades.
Two students of Florida university
who * were motoring to New York
state to work in a country club this
summer were killed near Fayetteville
when their sedan collided with a
truck.

June 24th and Thursday, June

The German seaplane DO-X, big-?
est flying boat in the world, which
last week successfully crossed the
Atlantic to Brazilian coast, reached
Natal on Friday and after a few days
will continue on to Rio Janeiro. In
its longest flight across it covered
1,429 miles in 12 hours, 26 minutes
between Porto Praia and Fernado Do
Noronha island, 200 miles off the
coast of Brazil.

Colonel Lindbergh is making final
tests and plans for his propo?pd ?ir.
plane flight across the northern Pacific
to Japan and China in a big
Lockheed-Sirius plane. He will be
accompanied by Mrs. Lindbergh, who
will assist in piloting the airplane,
which will be equipped with a radio
outfit.
Sues For $21,000 As
Result of Death
Paper8 of suit for *21,000 have
been filed in the office of the Clerk
of Court for Chester county by Mrs.
Sue M. Hind man, of Bascomville,
mother of Price Hindman, 6-year-old
son, who was struck and killed on
May third, laat, by an automobile
alleged to h*v* been driven by Mrs.
E. R. MoCrorey of Ittchburg.
The complaint alleges that tbe boy
was standing within 3 or 4 feet Of
the ditch alongside of a parked car
and / that Mrs. MoCrorey had about
fifteen feet to have missed him. It is
further alleged that Mrs. MbCrorey
was running at a rapid rate of speed
at the time of the accident. Attorney
David iHamilton of Chester is attorney
for the plaintiff. The defendant
has twenty days withinwhich
to file an answer to .the complaint as

Figures compiled by the department
of ugriculture at Washington
show that 1,044,}94 fewer bales of
cotton moved to the mills from August
1, 1030 to June 5, 1031, than
during the same period a year earlier.
The price of cotton is so low that
the manufacturers cannot handle the
products made from cotton at a fair
profit.
ijV Five men were buried alive in a
tJbilding excavation cave-in in Philadelphia.
The bodies were buried 70
feet below the surface. A policeman
was killed and three others injured,
when a patrol in which they
were hurrying to the scene was
wrecked by another automobile.
The United Confederate Veterans'
reunion at Birmingham, Ala., closed
with a parade, with most of the
1^500 veterans attending riding in
automobiles. One veteran proudly
marched the entire route of the parsite:

The. census reveals that there are
2,414 more married men than married
women in Kentucky.

The tax collections in South Carolina
in May were $460,003 which was
$102,000 less fthitTi If? way, iwoO. Inheritance
taxes doubled, but income
taxes fell from $204,782 last year in
May to $68,026 last month. Soft
drink taxes also fell off markedly,
but the gasoline tax continued bo
increase, being $548,102 in May 1930,
and $609,469 in May 1031.

Mrs. Sallie M. Barfield
Mrs. Sallie M. Barfield, aged 55
years, passed away at her home in
Kershaw Sunday about twelve o'clock
after a lingering illness. The funeral
services were conducted from her
home Monday morning at eleven o'clock
by her pastor, Rev. W. J. Bradley,
assisted by Rev. J. B. Gaston, of
Camden.
Mrs. Barfield was the daughter of
Mr^ and Mrs. James Thomas JLewik
and was bOrri. and reared in. the Gantey
Hill section of Kershaw county.
Her father,- J. T. Lewis, aged 79
years, survives her. Mrs. Barfield
leaves the following children, Mrs.

C. Ivftwis of Columbia and J. E. Lewis
of Camden.
Mrs. Barfield was a loyal member
of the Baptist church. While she
was unwell for a while she bore her
illness with splendid! Christian forti-'
tude and was anxious that the Lord's
will be done in her life. A Christian
woman has gone to her reward.
