Automatic Pistol Runs Amuck
Elizabeth City, N, C., May 4.?Hazel
Tadlock, 28, of this city, was dead
today, and bis wife, child an<J brother
suffered from wounds?all the victims
of two bullets from an automatic
pistol.
Mrs. Tadlock and Gaither Tadlock,
the brother, said the pistol accidentally
dropped from the seat of an automobile
in which the four were riding
yesterday and discharged,
Hazel Tadlock, they explained, -was
carrying the weapon to kill hawks
that had been bothering chickens in
the neighborhood.

week in Greenville, that he will run
again in WM for the same office.

Sweet Potatoes
Below ia a letter Henry D. Green,
county agent, received from Mr. L. P.
Wateon, Extension Horticulturist,
Aiken, S. C.
ul have just returned from a trip
to South Georgia where I visited
sweet potato plant beda for the purpose
of locating plant* of the type
of potatoes that we are stressing
in this state. I found a number of
beds in which very good quality of
potatoes were used for seed. However,
the plant crop this year is only
a/bout HO per cent of that of last
year, Georgia was unable to supply
the demand last year and with the |
increasing acreage* this year, good
plants are going to be extremely hard
to get.
"The Extension .Service is planning
to place a man in Georgia to
see that orders are filled from beds
which have been inspected for diseases
and for stock true to type.
Please make every effort to get in
touch with your growers and have
them place their orders with you.
If you will send the orders to me, I
will see that they are placed with
our representatives in Georgia who
will endeavor to secure only the very
best plants.
"This is not a money-making
scheme.. As you know we are simply
trying to get the best plants available
for our growers at the most
reasonable price. Assure your growers
that the price paid by them will
be the price charged by the plant
growers ami that there is no middle
man connected in any way whatsoever
with this plan.
"A number 'of plant growers have
already contracted for a large part
of their crop and in order, to get
plants pulled at the first of the I
season and of 'best quality, it will
be necessary to rush these orders J
so our man may bo able to have,
them sent out promptly.
"The price of these plants will be
approximately $1;50 jier thousand,
f. o. b. shipping point. If the grower
will send a Money Order when he
I places his order, it will enable us
| to get these orders through much
quicker and if in any case the plants
can be purchased in larger quan1
titles for less, the money will be
refunded to the purchaser.

to aond f track into Georgia and
haul the plants out at this can be
done cheaper than having thorn shipped
out by express. This is also an
advantage as plants will be delivered
the morning after the day they were
pulled, since the trip cap be made
in a day and a night and they will
arrive in much better condition. If
you find that your orders warrant
iaending a truck, advise me by phone
| and I shall arrange for a local guide
to meet the truck at Baxley, Ga., and
direct them to growers having the
very best quality of sweet potato
plants. Plants "Vill begin moving by
May 1st, so pleas? act promptly in
order that we may get the very best
plants available.
"Will you kindly give this 'matter
all possible publicity through your
local -papers and through circular* to
your growers.
"Will state that I am familiar with
two trucks that will haul these potato
plants in lots of three hundred
thousand or more at a1 very reasonable
rate, assuring oheaper^dnd more
iprompt delivery than by express. Advise
me if ..you wish and I. can put,
you in touch with these parties."

,... An old friend of mine bobbed
up today. Ho drifted into my office
unexpectedly. I hod not seen him
since he got married about 14 years
ago. After telling me 'Howdy-do, he
told he that he wanted me to write
him urp, and 1 asked him what for,
and he said 13 younguns.
.... Well, he seemed a f it-siibject for
my column been married 14 years,
owned exactly 13 children and one
wife. He was 38 himself find his
wife, so he said, was 34. His youngest
was 13 days old and his oldest
would be 13 years old on May 13.
He was married on February 13, and
his wife was tborn on the 13 of July.
... .He possibly shoulddent have said
it, "but he expects to be the proud
father of 13 more children. He said
he owned an old Ford until his 10th
baby was (born, and as it was too
crowded with 10 little ones and 2 big
ones, he sold it and bought himself
a truck;?with a ton capacity, or 13
childre/t nnd the p& and ma.
. .He told me that children all
had wonderful appetites. Two years
ago, he had to stop asking the blessing
at meals. It had got so when
he got to "Amen" with his blessing
there wassent 2 good bites of anything
left on the table. They were
satisfied with corn bread and buttermilk,
or buttermilk and com bread
at all three meals a day, (but he said
he frequently had gravy 'for them.

his baby "John," and he had forgot
that his second boy was named
'John" too, so he,, decided to call
the last one "John-Too." He and his
wife try to count them, or . check

off to his grandpas one day last
year and he .wassent missed for a
week.
