Lately, however, people in the neighborhood had reported that Nita waa keeping a disorderly house and selling liquor. Thia morning qffiem a ('handler! and Jones stopped in to see Nita and talk to her about these reports. They found her in the living room standing by the mantelpiece. Officer Chandler told her of the reporta of hej behavior that jtad been coming and warned her that she would have to atop selling liquor. He then asked her jf she didn't have some liquor in the house then. The woman denied thia and fell to the floor. The officer picked her up and placed her in a chair, where she revived immediately. She then got up and went and got a black bag and told! Chandler that people had accused her of bringing liquor in the house in , the bag and she wanted to show it to him. Officer Chandler asked the woman again if she didn't have liquor in the house and told her that if she would tefl him where it was he would not arrest her but merely take the liquor and give her another chance. The woman started to tell the officer where she had buried some liquor in the yard but fell again before she ould finish. The officers placed her on the bed and Chundler went to get a doctor. When he returned with the doctor .the woman was dead.?Saturday's Sumter Item. Twenty-nine persons have been indicted by a Federal grand jury at St. Paul, Minn? for their connection with the operations of the Diamond Motor Parts Co., of St. Cloud, Minn. Bans, retired dentist r)l Columbia, announced today that Bass had signed a written confession made to them in which he admitted he killed William R. Pearman, of Columbia, on whom )x? held . assignments of $200,000 in Bfe in- ^ surance. The- confession names "Hooky" as ( one of the gunmen and says he and j the others had insisted Pearman, a Columbia mechanic, be "bumped off" immediately "because he was drinking and talking too much," and fer the further reason that the gunmen wanted $100,000 which was to have been Pearman's shure in the insurance fraud. According to the confession, Dr. , Bass sold Pearman some land in Arkansas under, the name of William Folta, as a part of the insurance fraud plojt and then took out $200,tJ00 insurahce on "Folta's" life. The | i gunmen. Dr. Bass said, were to have J supplied a body to be identified as that of Folta, but "they failed me in this and insisted upon making Pearman the goat." Dr. Bass was quoted as saying his own life was threatened if he did not kill Pearman. Accordingly, the confession said, he drove to Kansas City March 20 for a conference there with Pearman concerning taxes due on the Arkansas j land. There, ho said, "Hooky" met him outside the Savoy hotel where Pearman was stopping and said Pearman must be killed.
