His '"Believe It or Not" cartoons have taken him into some b* different countries in search of material. "Rip", u.- he signs himself, likes to travel? end he gets the urge honestly. When his grandmother crossed the plains in an ox-cart she didn't know she was going to settle in Santa Rosa, ('ah, but that's where she landed, and i' was while en route that Ripley's mother was born, in a covered wagon. Ripley's father liked to travel, too, for when a hoy he swam the Ohio river and ran away from home, near Wheeling, W. Ya. It was a cold day in December?Christmas?1K'J3 when Ripley was horn. It isn't recorded whether his first cry was for a bottle or some paper hut he learned to draw on both and at the age of 14 sold a picture to a comic weekly for $K. Three years later he migrated to San Francisco where he got a job on the Chronicle, drawing pictures for the sports page. Art for art's sake is a beautiful thought but when Ripley found it wouldn't nourish his pocketbgok sufficiently he quit his job and headed for New York where he had been t'?|d everybody made more money than they could ever use. It was v.hile on the staff of the New York Globe that Ripley, one day when Ideas n fused to present themselves, tried sketching several athletes who had done almost unbelievable stunts. The new pictures on the sports page took like hot cakes and Ripley was encouraged to keep on with the idea. That was 10 years ago. In the years following Ripley has been vailed a liar so many times that it is the be-t testimony that people like* to read his cartoons. In every case the correspondent is furnished with proof of the assertion; and Ripley claims a perfect record in ad these years. Believe it or not, Ripley receives half a million letters a year, which if laid end to end would reach 1") miles! York Merchants To Fight Chains York, Fob. 24.?Independent merchants of York, reinforced by individuals in sympathy with the cause, enlisted today in the fight ugainsf chain stores. Thirty firms and individuals paid $12 each us entrance membership fee in "The Minute Men of America," the organization that has been formed recently to conduct a crusade against chain stores of all kinds. A telegram was sent \Y. K. Henderson of Shreveport, La., who launched the campaign against chain stores, advising him of the action ?1? t; ken by York business men and giving the information that a cashier's iheck for was being forwarded him. v Captured Liquor Car Itural Officers Dollard and Ncrris of Sumter county captured a new Ford couch early Tuesday morning on the road between Camden and Sumter nead Hillcrest school. The car was equipped with a smoke screen and blinded the officers for twenty miles. The capture included 102 gallons of whiskey. Roth occupants of the car escaped.
