1- More Plant* Per Row More Cotton Per Acre Clomum^oUoe*. May 4.~"Two to three plants every twelve inches, ?ay? Dr. T. 8. Kwie. chief agronomUt here, in answer to the question ot spacing cotton now being asked hy ? , many farmers, reaults of the cotton contests having shown this to be a most important question. Close spacing within the drill not only provides more plants in a area, thus reducing the number each must bear in order for a high yield to be secured, but it promotes earlier fruiting which is of great importance In producing cotton under boll weevil conditions, Dr. Huie explains. In experiments which 1ihv? been conducted at both Cleinson College und Florence it has been found that, without exception, those plots which had plants spaced near together produced more fruit by midseason than where room was afforded foi rank and excessive vegetative growth. H is true thut plants which have an abundance of room for full growth make much better appearing plants?more suitable for entering in a prize competition, but the farmer is more interested in securing high yields than in pi educing prize winning plants. Hen* and Dollars Clemson College, May 4. -Bight hundred farmers in 40 South Carolina counties received cash amounting to $110,000 for approximately 426,000 pounds of poultry in 26 cooperative carlot shipments during April, according to figures from the office of L. H. Lewis, Extension agent in marketing, with headquarters at Florence. In 23 counties, shipments have been made twice during the month, and in four counties, three times during the month. Total shipments for 1929 to May 1 are 92 cars totaling 1,810,000 pounds having a value of nearly half a million dollars. Indications are that there will ho fully 150 cars shipped in 1929 as compared-with 134 cars ill 1928 and 100 cars in 1927. The prices obtained by farmers so far this year, Mr. Lewis states, have fcj'en very good and should materially increase poultry production in South Quroli na. During the past 30 days tjjjlo Naw York market has been in excellent condition, with hens selling 34 to 35 cents per pound, which nets farmers 27 to 28la cents per pound.
