Schilletter, Extension Horticulturist Start out right this season by having the garden thoroughly prepared before plnnting. Too often gardens are poorly prepared, and the vegetables do not grove off as readily *t they should. Apply fertilizer very heavily, broadcasting it over the entire garden, about one ton of 8-4-4 per acre; then apply fertilizer in the drill as the various vegetables are] planted, using about 800 pounds per acre. Just bear in mind that you' must feed the plants well in order! that they may make rapid and satisfactory growth. Topdressing with 150 pounds of nitrate of soda per acre is recommended. Carrots, salsify, and parsnip should be sown now. These excel-, lent root crops are very easily grpwn. The carrots will be ready for use in| late May or June, and the parsnips and salsify may be used in late summer, efcrly fall, and winter. ! Hills for melons, cucumbers, and squash should be made now. Mix the manure well with the soil after adding a handful of acid phosphate and kainit, but do not plant until apply blossoms open. A few for very early use may be started 'in strawberry boxes in hotbeds. Tomato plants being grown in the hotbeds should be given very little water, and the beds should be allowed to remain uncovered except on cold nights, to make the plants strong and tough and better able to withstand outside conditions. Stout-stemmed and stocky plants, well hardened off may be set in the open ten days earlier. The Tennessee general assembly on Monday voted $20,000 flood relief to be turned over to the Red Cross in that state. ? - ! 1 1 11 Mh and Mrs. J. E.
