Saves a Farm Greenwood, lH;c. 0. How the desire fdr boxwood on the part of a wealthy northerner saved 200 acres of land^ in Gieenwood county is told by a local attorney. ThO owner of the land ha'df a.i uncomfortable mortgage on hi* 1 farm of about 200 acres and he had not been able to keep up the interest. The thing grew, as such things will! grow, and the indebtedness about a J year ago had reached something like I $1,800. The holder of the mortgage i happened to he a concern in liquida- j tion and those in charge were anxious J to wind up its afTairs and a forec* closure seemed inevitable as no new loan in such a figure could be found.! The farmer appealed to the Greenr wood lawyer and the lawyer and the representative of the concern holding the mortgage looked over the place, with the result that the representative agreed that if the farmer could raise $1,000 he would advise its acceptance and a cancellation of the mortgage. An extension of 30 days was granted. The farmer thought he had $400 or $500 worth of pine timber on his I place, but a saw mill man, after look1 ing over it, would not make an offer as the timber was too scattered to ' be cut at a profitr *1 The outlook again was gloomy. But it happened that the Greenwood attorney noticed several bushes of 1 fine boxwood in front of the house, about a half dozen. He had mentionled this to the farmer who said there had been about an acre .of it, but he had cut all of it down except the few bushes in front of his home. _ ? The Greenwood lawyer had an idea after the timber deal fell through and I he called a lady in Aiken who j specializes in the boxwood business. She came up?it happened to be on I Sunday, too?and they visited the I farm for an inspection of the boxI wood business. The offer was ac- ; cepted and the farmer through a I loan -of $600 saved his place. This year he made a good crop and not only paid his crop expenses but J the balance due on two mules and his 1 interest a year in advance so that he lean see dayiight now?thanks to the I half dozen bushes of boxwood. I If he had saved the acre he cut Idown he would have had .several 1 thousand dollars worth on the basis ,lof what he got for the few bushes ho _ I sold, or much more th?if the" 200~'acres cost him or would sell for at the I present time?or perhaps in years to 1 come.
