Through the local paper this organization has solicited contributions for the fund and begs to acknowledge receipt o^dq. nations from the following winter residents of the city: Mr. C. K. Bolton, Cleveland, Ohio; Mr, A. F. Carpenter, Rome, New York; Mr. H. F. Lloyd, Philadelphia; Mrs. K. E. Maruieville, Caipdeh; Mr. R. W. Pomeroy, New York City; Mr. Wilson Potter, I^iew York City; Mr. Samuel Russell, Camden; Mr. Frederick Sturgess, New York City; Mr. J. S. Sweeney, Crosse Point Farms, Michigan. This fund, according to Miss Olive Whitridge, chairman of v the Tree Committee, has reached $350.00 up to the present time, and it is hoped they will be able to raise as much as $500. In addition to this splendid work the Civic League still maintains its program of furnishing milk to the undernourished children in the public schools. American Legion Dance An interesting social event and a thoroughly enjoyable one was the American Legion Dance given by the local Post last Monday evening at the Legion Hall on DeKalb Street. The ballroom was effectively decorated with the Legion colors and with flags, making the setting a most fitting one for the celebration on Armistice Day. Punch was served the guests throughout the evening. The Chaperones were: Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Llewellyn, Dr. and Mrs. Carl West, Dr. and Mrs. Sidney Zemp, Mrs. Alice Marye, Dr. John W. Watson, pastor of the Lyttloton Street Methodist church is uttending the Methodist Conference being held this week in Orangeburg. Miss Emma Villepigue, of Darlington, was the guest of her mother, Mrs. P. T. Villepigue, at her home on Chesnut street during the past week end. Mr. P. M. Rhodes, of Vineyard Haven, Mass., arrived Wednesday for the winter and will be at 1803 Fail street. Mrs. Rhodes is now visiting in Memphis, Tenn. and will join him later. Right Reverend Monsignor Murray, of Baltimore, Rev. Martin Murphy, of Shandon, and Rev. Henry Spiermann, of Columbia, were dinne" guests at St. Mary's Rectory on Wednesday. Meeting of Canvassing Committee A very pleasant and interesting meeting of the Canvassing Committee of the Camden Baptist ChUrch was held at the residence of Mr. M. G. Huckabee on Wednesday night last to formulate plans for making a canvass of the members of . the church for pledges for the support of the church for the coming year. Before the officers can make definite financial plans* for the year it is necessary that they know how much each member of the church expects to give, and it is desired that every member of the church shall have the priviledge of contributing tow<ard the support of the church. |t was deoided by the committee that this canvass will be made ou the first Sunday afternoon in December. For the coming year the church use the Duplex envelope, in this system each member is furnished with a package of envelopes bearing a separate number. A record is kept by the Church Treasurer of the nuiuon the package given tio .each nrtlffber, and as .contributions are paade in the envelopes a proper credit is given for each payment made. In this way the Treasurer is able at any time to report the amount contributed by every member for every cause. In* many churches regular statements are furnished the members showing payments made And calling attention to arrearages if envelopes have not been returned according to pledges made. It is asked that the amount contributed be written on the envelope for the guidance of the Treasurer in the event the envelope should become unsealed. Medical Association Meets The Medical Association was entertained at its regulmr meeting for this month by Dr. John W. Corbet^ on Wednesday evening at his home on Lyttleton street. ' After all business was discussed and disposed of the hostess served a delicious salad course. Old-Time Hot Supper An old-time hot chicken supper will be served at the Community House at Lugoff, Friday, November 23rd, at 7:30 o'clock. , This attractive Community House is located on the Camden-Columbia highway near Lugoff. The money raised from selling these hot suppers will go for expenses of the Community House . under the supervision of the Lugoff ~ Home Demonstration Club. ? | * A Surprise Shower The ladies of Circle Number One of the Woman's Missionary Union of the Camden Baptist Church gave a surprise shower honoring Mrs. J. P. Graham Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 6 o'clock at the home of Mrs. J. H. Clyburn. A social hour was spent in games and contests. A bud vase was presented to Mrs. Palmer Stokes, which was won in a contest, after which autographs were inscribed in a beautiful little book- to be presented to the honor guest, along with many other gifts in memory of her-, untir| ing efforts in Christian work in this L?lty. A salad course was served by the hostess assisted by Mrs. W, K, Clyburn, Mrs. L. T. Mills and daughter Sara spent last week end in Newberry with' the parents of Mrs. Mills, Senator and Mrs. Alan Johnston.
