Mr. Smith, a native of Camden, and brother of Judge Mendel L. Smith, has made his home in Sheveport, La., for the last 13 years. For some time he has been in the automobile business in that city., A star of the first water both in football and basdbull at Carolina just after the turn of the century, Sid Smith took up professional baseball und made quite a success pf the sport. He did well in the big leagues and had a wonderful career in the minors. l,Ie wound up as manager of Shreveport in the Texas league and when hp decided to call it quits so far as professional 'ball was concerned, he located in that city. He has been very ; successful as an automobile salesman and is now employed there, but he wanted to get 'back to South Carolina j and for that reason got in touch with Ernest M. DuPre, head of the DuPre Motor company, state distributor for Graha-m-dPaige, who gave him a contract. i All the older fans know Sid Smith and all the younger fans have heard of him. It's good to know that he is coming back to Columbia.?'Monday's Columbia State. William F. Whiting of Holyoke, Mass., has been appointed to succeed Herber Hoover as secretary of commerce in the caibinent of President Coolidge. The resignation of Mr. Hoover was accepted by the president on Tuesday. Miss Ivy Hawkes, English woman, succeeded in swimming the English Channel last Sunday. She was in the water 20 hours and 44 minutes. A negro baby two years old was killed near Ninety-Six yesterday by a rock thrown by one negro man at another which missed the target and hit the baiby on the head, in a riot at a church. Gave Fancy Costume Party Mieses. Alma Hall and Elleu Stew-; art were hostesses on last Thursday evening at a fancy costume party, honoring Miss Mary Lou Moaeley who leaves for Orangeburg shortly. At nine o'clock the guests were invited into supper and as they assembled their imany colored costumes made a pleasing picture. Sunflowers were used in all decorations. Among the out of town guests , were: Miss Aubrey McNultey, of Charlotte; Mr. Jack Boyd, of New York City; Mr. Johnnie White, of Kershaw. After ' judging the costumes dancing was enjoyed. Thomas Dunlap as a Roman soldier won first prize for men and Miss Mary Helen Flowers won; first for ladies. Miss Louise Drawdy as a colored mammy and H. Eugene Hinson as a clown brought forth much merrimeut. Entertain at Bridge On Tuesday afternoon Miss Alberta Team and Mi's. Mortipier Boykin entertained a number of their friends at bridge. These men compose what it known a? the 72-Car club, which it made up of retail salesmen who sell 72 new cars in one year or the equivalent. The four highest ranking salesmen' are chosen as officers of the Zone club. They are: Judge O'Dell, Fasley, president; L. H. Campbell of the Welsh Motor Company, of Camden, vice president; J. H. Stokes, Columbia, secretary; J. M. Crocker, Anderson, treasurer. C. K. Hughes of Union ranked higher thun uny of the above and qualified as regional vice president. The regional officers are the four highest ranking salesmen from the five states of North and South Carolina, Florida, Alabama and Georgia. Last year the Columbia 72-Car club had 47 members, while this year there are 81 in the cliib. Extensive arrangements are being made in Atlanta for the entertainment of these visiting salesmen, which include i doubleheader (baseball game between Birmingham and Atlanta, theater party, prize fight, and big (banquet at the Atlanta Bilbmore hotel, headquarters while in Atlanta. Members of the Columbia Chevrolet organization who will accompany the club to Atlanta are: P. A. Watson, zone sales manager; E. B. Gunter, Jr., assistant zone sales manager; L. W. Williams, zone sales promotion manager. Also six district representatives: George E. Barlow, Columbia; J. A. Jeter, Batesburg; H. C. iSchall, Spartanburg; P. M. Phillips, Rock Hill; J. H. West, Darlington; R. L. Kerr of Charleston. Senator Joseph T. Robinson, candidate for vice-president, will speak at Columbia next month on September 13. A1 Smith will not make a speech in this state, but will speak in Kentucky and Tennessee in the South. Had Happy Reunion All of, the members of the Myers family gathered in Camden Sunday for a family reunion. It was the first time in fifteen years since all the members had been together for such an occasion. They met here at the homes of Mrs. T. P. Brown and Mrs. Carrie M. Davis, on Mill street for the happy event. Dinner was served by Mrs. Brown and the day was spent pleasantly by the large family of ten. Those here for the day were: Mr. L. H. Death of Mrs. Emily McNaughton I Mrs. Emily McNaughton died at I her home in the mill village last Fri| day after an illness of a'bout eight weeks in the sixty-third year of her life. She is survived by one brother and eleven grown children.
