Barton, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, National Adjutant of The American Legion since August 1, 1925, attained his high office by consistent service to the Legion over a period of seven hard working years. His looord of Lotion i t service is long and impressive. He began to work for the Legion when the Legion itself began. In 1919 he was chosen commander of Fort Dodge Post. So successful was his work with this post that he was named department adjutant of Iowa in September 1920. Then followed a remarkable record of Legion service. In 1921, 1922, 1923 and 1924 he served as the adjutant of Iowa Department, his unanimous election to the office each successive year speaking for his efficiency and capabilities. Then under dramatic circumstances came his elevation to the assistant national adjutancy, which later lead to the national adjutancy. At the Iowa post commanders' and adjutants' conference in February, 1925, Past National Commander James A. Drain, speaking of Past National Adjutant Creviston's pending resignation, said: "The Legion will soon require a ! big man to fill the vacancy made by the resignation of Adjutant CrevisI ton In the state of Iowa there is a man who most nearly approaches j our high ideal of national adjutant Calibre, and that man is Jim Barton ! o f To w a 1' * Mr. Hart on came l?? national headquarters on April 1, 1925, as asI <istaut national adjutant and served I in that capacity until August 1. 1925, j when he assumed the duties of na tional adjutant, which office he ml holds. Mr. Barton was born at Seneqfl Wisconsin, in 1886. He was ucated at Fort Dodge, Iowa, and lafcl took a law course at the Univerat^^H of Iowa. While at the university,? was a star athlete and captained varsity basketball team in his sen*? year. He is a member of Sigma N? fraternity. . ? He enteVed the service as a fin? lieutenant within ten days after *i? was declared in 1917, carrying will? , him his army experience gained ft? the Mexican border in 1916. He mil assigned to duty with Company I*? Second Infantry, Iowa Natioall Guard. Within a month he won^"^? motion to a captaincy.
