Giant of this county was. ?h,Qt last night while raiding: a still. Sheriff Giant ?Yld his deputy, S. Jini Sellers, were watching' the still from a point of vantage in the woods until they wore ready to arrest the men. Ah the sheriff started to leave his hiding place and gave the command to halt, one of the negroes started shooting, oiu' of the balls taking effect in the. sheriff's leg just below the thigh. The ball struck a coin in Mr. Grant's ?pocket, bonding it double and then glancing and hitting his leg just out from the bone. The wound is not thought to be serious but the attend ing physicians are using every pre caution against its becoming infected. Herbert Campbell, one of the negroes who was in the party, is In jail, hav ing been caught before lie could make his ecape. The other negro, who was responsible for the shooting, 'has not been arrested, neither the sheriff nor his deputy knowing his name and Campbell refusing to tell it. Bloodhounds were immediately wired for from Columbia and it is thought that the negro will be ar rested shortly. Mrs. liUiiey Has Birthday Chesterfield, June 22. ? The birth*, day of Mrs. John Laney was cele brated at her home near Chora w yes terday by one of her famous birth day dinners. Two hundred and eighty of Mrs. Laney's relatives were thore to help her celebrate this annual af ?fnir ? in grand style. Dinner was SerVed under the spacious oak trees iii the yard and it was a dinner de , ?luxe, consisting of every kind of thicken barbecue, pork and beef and ?nil kinds of vegetables. After dinner Senator -Roach Stew ?art made a short talk on Mrs. Laney s life which dates back to the Mexican war anil of the trial of the people ulong with the Civil war. People from all parts of the state were there to witness, the celebration of this great affair which is one of the lar gest attended birthday dinners in this part of the state. Mickle-Deal A marriage of much interest to .their friends is that of Miss Mamie Mi cklii and Milton Deal which was performed Thursday at 6 o'clock at*, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Stokes. The rooms were thrown ensuite and tastefully decorated with mid-summer's lovely flowers and ferns. Prior to the ceremony "Thais" was played *by Mrs. M. C. Pursley who had charge of the music. To the strains of Lohengrin's wedding march the bridal couple entered the living room and stood before a bank of tall ferns, shasta daisies and white pe tunias to make their vows. During the ceremony Humoresque was softly played. The R?bv. J. G. Peeler of the Lyttleton Street Methodist church performed the ceremony. Only the near relatives and a few close friends were present. The youthful bride was lovely in a poudre blue crepe de chine suit with harmonizing hat and slippers. Her bouquet was of white carnations and maiden hair fern. Mrs. Deal is the, attractive daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Mickle of West Wateree. She attended Camden High School this year and has made many friends here. She made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Stokes while attending school here. Mr. Deal is a man of sterling worth ?ind enjoys a large circle of friends. .He is a native of Virginia but has . tmade his home in South Carolina fo. the past several years. He holds a responsible position with the State Highway Department. Immediately after the ceremony the happy couple left for a wedding trip through the mountains pf North Car olina. On their return they will re side on North Broad street in this city. Married at Williamston Mr. William YV. Huckabee, formerly of Camden, but no\^ residing in Wil liamston, S. C., was married in that ?town on June 17th, to Miss Lois Poore, of that place. The Rev. Mc Cuen performed the ceremony. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Marjorie Poore. Little Katherlne McCuen was flower girl and William Edwin MiTTer acted as ring bearer: The wedding was solemnized at the ?home of the bride's parents and the wedding march was played by Miss Katherine Tollison of Williamston. T-. Mr. and Mrs. Huckabee hare been visiting relatives in and near Camden for a few days.
