"Texas ha* been the scene of my bitterest trouble, but I plan to make it my home when 1 am fit c again." His departure to serve a sentence of fourteen years and nine months for fraudulent use of the mails ter minted his stay of more than sixteen months in the Tarrant county jail. The claimant to discovery of the north pole, with twelve of his assis tants in thi* Kslroleum Producers' as sociation, was sentenced on Novem ber m, ifL';:. l)r. Cook, president of the com pany and principal defendant, was given the most severe penalty. He sides the prison sentence he was fined $12,000 at\d trial costs, An appeal was heard here last Novem ber and in January the higher court affirmed the judgment. Since then Dr. Cook has been in jail pending his decision whether to accept the sentence ogr carry the fight to the supreme court. Last week he adopt ed the former course. Neither Dr. Cook nor his many adherents believe he will servo the entire term. Petitions to the pre?i dent asking for' his pardon have been placed in circulation and a large number of signatures already have been obtained. When he reaches Leavenworth Dr. Cook will find there but one of the men sentenced with him. This is Seymour E. J. Cox, promoter and author of the promotion, literature, who besides a long sentence in the Cook case, later had another five years added in the Bluebird oil case at Houston. All the other defend ants, except one who died in prison, >have completed their terms or been paroled. Dr. Cook was not heavily laden with luggage when he loft. He car ried a small suitcase and several bun-1 dies containr.ig materials for the art needle work that has been his sol ace during hi.s stay in jail. He has completed many beautiful specimens of this work and distributed them among his friends. Dr. Cook several times recently has indicated he intends coming back to Texas and practicing medicine when he is released. Par rott, postmaster at Bishopville and several times mayor of the town, eotfP mitted suicide at his home here to night, shooting himself through the head with a ..'*8 calibre pistol. Death was apparently instantaneous. Mr. Parrott had always been an ?active man, but recently had been in poor health, and especially so last week. Until four years ago -when he was appointed postmaster, he had been the cashier of the Farmers Loan and Trust company of Bishopville. Last night Mr. Parrott and his wife had been discussing a letter from their son, a student at the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Parrott left the room for a brief visit to a neigh bor leaving her husband alone at the house. When she returned she found the door looked and looking through the window saw her husband lying on the floor. Upon entering the room she discovered that he was dead, having apparently shot himself wit'h his pis tol at about 8:45 o'clock. On the envelope of the letter from their son was *f*rT1>bled a brief mes sage: "God bless you, my boy. Take care of your mother." A letter was also left to his wife, which, rt is thought, contains some explanation of his act, but Mrs. Par rott has as yet been unable to read it. Besides his son and wife Mr. Par rott is survived -by six daughters, one of whom lives in Kentucky. Gets a Big Laugh Columbia, Aprii 1.?Representative Sam Rittenberg of Charleston, caused a lot of merriment in the house last night when he introduced the bill ex empting farmers from all taxes if they wished and to disfranchise all those taking advantage of the exemp tion. Seldom is a speech made on any measure that oven indirectly re fers to money but that the fanners are used as the cause of the plea. It was to get a laugh out of these speeches that Mr. Rittenberg irttro duced his measure and he got it. Of course, it was never intended to be regarded as being Horious.
