Coming Marriage of Cordial Interest Of more than statewide interest is the recently announced engagement of Miss Josephine Meussen of Wood mere, Long Island, to Mr. Thomas f)ouglas Ancrum formerly of Cam den, now of Chester. Miss Meussen is not a stranger in Mr. Ancrum's native town ab she visited hero as the guest of Miss Elizabeth Carri-1 son and also of Miss Ethel Yates and was a bride's maid in the brilliant wedding of Miss Carrison and Major Sumner Waite in the autumn of 1023. ! She is the fortunate possessor of Krace, charm, beauty and splendid mental attainments that blend in a pleasipg and winning personality. It is a platter of much regret to Mr. Ancrum's host of life-long friends that they are not to make their home in Camden they at first contem plated. St. Patrick Dance Well Attended ? St. Mary's Hall was taxed to the* | very limit at the Masquerade ball on St. Patrick's night, March 17th. The <ostumes were so remarkable that the judges were at a loss to render a, decision. ? Three from Court Inn, two trom the Kirkwood and one from the Hobkirk Inn carried off the prizes. First prize for ladies was $5.00, first j prize for ,pien $2.50, second prizes $2.00 each, third prizes $1.00 each. The prizes were awarded by the judges, Mrs. Partridge,-of Court Inn; Mr. Johnson, Detroit; and Mr. Fari;en of Massachusetts. Everyone coin cided with the decisions of the judges. H. W. Stevens, venerable mother of Dr. W. G. Stevens, will l'egret to learn of her citical illness Jft the hospital in Camden. Mrs. Stevens has been making her home with a daugh ter, Mrs. Leroy Davidson, in Camden, and two months ago suffered a fall resulting in a fracture of the hip. From this she has never rallied, and became critically ill a week ago. Rel atives and friends are quite appre hensive owing to the advanced 'age of Mrs. .Stevens, over HO years . The magnificent, auditorium of Sumter's new high school building was formally opened last week. George Thomas Sibert, Jr., a vet eran of the World war, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Sibert, near Bradley, last Thurs day. Dillon county shipped a carload of poultry last week, John S. Beasley, 48 years of aga, died last Wednesday at St. Charles. John S. Richardson, well known citizen of Sumter, died last week at Mulling. Marion county last week shipped its first car of poultry, the same bringing $3,061.21. Newberry county shipped a carload of poultry* to northern markets last Saturday. A carload of hogs and a carload of poultry will be shipped from Man ning in the next few days. William P. Silva, distinguished landscape painter, is at wOrk on painting scenes of Magnolia Garden. Representative Tucker, Democrat of Virginia, has announced that he will not accept the increased pay voted a few days ago by the national senate and house of representatives for themselves. High winds, rain and hail'"storms did damage of half a million dollars or more throughout Indiana Wedncs^ day. A new postage stamp of the de nomination of 1 1-2 cents, for third class mail matter will be issued April litt. The stamp will bear a likeness of the late President Harding. The color of the stamp has not yet been announced. ' After attempted kidnapping in which he failed, William Cortallera, a Spaniard of New York, aged 25 years, on Wednesday tried to kill Kate Pipino, aged 10. The man had become infatuated with the girl and tried to kidnap and then kill her after he had been warned by the child's stepfather nob to. molest her. He committed suicide. Didn't Like Looks of Judge The lawyers appointed by Judge De Vore to defend George Durham, alias Sam Durham, a negro who was under indictment on a serious charge, had a hard time convincing him yesterday afternoon that the best thing he could do was to plead guilty to another charge, the court having permitted him to plead guilty to assault of a high and aggravated nature or stand trial on the other offense, oonv.iction of which would have meant a long sentence, if not the death penalty. "I been criss-crossed in court once," the negro told his lawyers, "and I don't want to plead guilty to nuthin'. To tell you de truth I don't like the looks of dat judge," and he walled his eyes at Judge DcVore. Durham, however, was finally persuaded to en ter the plea of guilty and he accept ed a sentence of one year on the roads with more or less satisfaction. Durham is said to have come to this county with some traveling shdw sev eral months ago.?Greenwood Index Jouryial.
