DANIEL <t?nt Attorney On*r?: S n.e killing charcku tov n>t rc Negro Boot blacks Arrested in Can nection With Sumter Murder. ; tw.i pkfm ? ? ,?.? ..#?? . ? Sumter, 8vpt, 1. -Four fU'jjro hoy-* Robert Long, alias Boy Hum; Levi} Belser, alias Buster Belser; La lie y Jones and Irving Thomas arrested this morning charged with the mu*-j .in wf Night Watchman J, M. I >u - Hose early Saturday morning. Were j removed from the Sumter county jail | this afternoon and taken to the St?tr.\ penitentiary at Columbia for safe keeping, when there was talk during the day of a mob making an attempt to secure the negroes. Report had it that citizens in th ? Sardinia and Turbeville sections, from which Mr. DuBose ramei were much incensed and it was deemed best to avert any trouble by removal of the negroes, especially as the Sumter jajl is an old one and not in condition vo J repel an attack. i Three of the negroes, Long, Jon s j and Belser, were arresfed early th's morning, . after they boarded an At lantic Coast Line train to go NorVh. The arrest was made by L. T. l'e Champs, special Atlantic Coast Lin.; officer, who was working on the case in conjunction with W. W. Rogers, state detective, and local officers. The other negro was taken in charge about three miles West of town about noon, when he was pointed out .o Joel King, white, by a negro as one of the boys wanted by the police and was delivered to officers just as the coroner's jury returned its verdie^ fixing the charge of murder upon the four. All of the negroes are under "0 and all were formerly bootblacks at the Atlantic Coast Line station. The state detective was called in on the case yesterday afternoon and with the chief of Sumter police, other local officers and the railroad detective be gan work at once upon the case. Word from a negro .woman that she had overheard the negro boys talking of making their getaway and an account from a negro man of their endeavor to sell him a box of cigars anil some cigarettes supplied the first clue. All trains leaving Monday night were watched, but only one of the four boys wanted was seen. This morn ing, however, Long, Jones and Belser, were seen getting on the Wilmington train just as it was leaving and Mr. besChamps, on the lookout for them, took them into custody. The arrest of the fourth, living Thoma*. was made iater. At the jail llelsei after hist telling officers that he and his c<>mpatiion> had r.oi been ;n town the nij;ht of the? murder but had instead broken into a st?>n at I'loM Mve, made a full confes sion. .-ayiny that he and Thomas were placed of! wai.h > n eithe1 -i.de of the -??u ,- \r i ? ? j I . p. xr or Mam and Laruy - I , -kr into t he I i 1 ' I i r ; . lit* s;nv M:.
