Instruments used by Mrs, Mack and her associates in the business of the institutional otfice a.e chietly . a. small metal strip containing impres sions of ike symbols u sod by the* blind, and a small lylus' somewhat resembling Ut cobbler's awl. Th-sc lmnrmrinns are raised mi one side of the metal strip and indented -on the opposite side. When a written record is to be made the metal is placed underneath Ote paper and the stylus is lised to press the paper into thiv depression * of * the symbol to be ^Xornusl. The rapidity with whuh an experienced writer can operate the system is in variably a matter of .astonishment to the visitor who watches; A typewriter is used in correspon dence. Its operation by the touch system is familiar to every graduate typist. Records are kept in raised type symbols and also in standard reading type raised so it may be read by touch. In an elaborate and perfectly accurate file Mrs. Mack has system atically arranged correspondence, re ports, sales records, literature, and everything pertaining to the associa tion's affairs, in such a way that in stantly her deft -fingers can draw forth any item desired. Formerly Mrs. Mack was a teacher of piano. "I play very little any more," she observed,*, adding, with a smile, "I have turned my attention to more practical things." And members of 'the association are "?thankful that Mrs. Mack has directed her energies as she lias, since she has become, the court of final appeal in many phases of the association work. She takes deep interest in im proving the opportunities of the blind, second only, perhaps, to the tender, motherly devotion of h^n eight-months-old, blue-eyed daughter who, with her husbaad, completes her family circle. Sends Dirt To His Wife? Spartanburg, ^ug. 21. ? Approach ing the parcel post window in, the local postoffice a negro recently asked that a shoe box carefully wrapped be weighed. Asked as to what it con tained he replied that it was filled with "South Carolina dirt" which he was sending to his wife in New York. "My wife wrote me and tol' me sho d/dn't like the taste of dat North ern dirt, and I lowed as how I better send her some from here, as she do like the taste o' (lis South Ca'lina clay," he explained. It was explained by the postal clerk that his wife was what is known as a "dirt eater," often found in the mountains of the Carolina^ Georgia and Tennessee.
