Young Crocker and a friend, Roy Thomas, l were swimming in the river about 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The ' stream was swift, and when the lad I jumped in he went down. Thomas I went- to his rescue and was seized around the neck and both came near drowning, Thomas caught a limb, which broke, causing the two to be \ come separated, and he was unable S to rescue the drowning boy. Sixteen persons were injured in a ? wreck of a Piedmont and Northern tram just outside the city Limits of ! Charlotte Tuesday afternoon. Motor I man L. B. Motorists may now travel over th<? (!onway- Myrtle Ueaeh road without any trouble, ac cording to X. S, Anderson, construc tion engineer of the state highway department* who has returned /rom a trip over the Horry county highway. Already considerable travel has been resumed over the road; .Mr. Anderson said. In a few places it is necessary for automobiles to proceed in single file, but otherwise the road presents no difficulties. A Tokyo dispatch of Monday, says that 57 lives were lost on July 11 when the Japanese freighter, Matsu Yama Mara foundered off Golo' island. Two unmasked bandits held up a Cigar Company's paymaster at Beth lehem, Pa., Monday, and got away with a payroll of $17,000. Kennesaw. Mountain Landis and John H. Farrell, baseball officials, were before a justice of the peace at Whitney Point, N. V., Monday on a charge of speeding. The justice dis missed the case. A healthy-sized delegation of Or angeburg citizens called on Governor McLeod Monday from Orangeburg, about a half dozen prominent citizens calling to implore the governor to al low Kd Shuler, prisoner in the state penitentiary, to go home for thirty days, to be with his wife, who is ill. The govei nor took the matter under advisement. Heading the delegation, was former Congressman K. C. Mann, and included in the crowd were Jesse Shuler, brother of the- prisoner; D.\ Browning, physician of the prisoners wife; Tillman Rice, J. 1>. Oliver and Constable Ballard.
